What Avent teat size did you have your newborn on and when did you switch to 1 month or 3 month plus teats?

DD was born two months premature and is now 2.5 months old (2 weeks adjusted). I had her on 3month plus teats and have just recently moved her to 1 month plus teats as I suspected that the faster flow made her choke and gag. The problem is now that she is drinking less as it needs greater effort so I don't know how to balance this. Should I stick with the 1 month plus teats and when can I move to the 3 month plus teats?

Glad to hear things are improving...and your washing load will half too!!! Well, she appears to be more settled now that the meds have kicked in... washing load still the same I'm afraid :\: This one seems to like targeting mommy quite a bit too!

Lemondrops, hang in there, at least you know from DD1 that it does get easier, it's just time that has to pass...and in the meantime it is sooo hard, if you need anything you have my contacts, please get in touch Thank you Jules. I keep reminding myself that this shall pass. It's been quite a difficult road so far, but hopefully with her growing up and the reflux meds kicking in, I can start enjoying my daughter!

Thanks for the advice Sheryl, DD was on the 3months plus teats but as she's got bad reflux I need to make sure that going forward her vomiting is a result of that and not contributed to by other factors, so I think you're right, this looks like the way to go for now. JulesLC! Lovely to hear from you. But what can I say :( It's been two and a half months and I still feel I'm at the entrance of a very long dark tunnel with no end in sight. Just when we think we're over something, something new pops up to keep things "interesting"... I have now decided I can't wait for DD to grow up! Thanks for the tip re teat cap sounds very useful. My DD suffered reflux too until she was 6 months and started on solids. Have you been advised to use infant Gaviscon? It works miracles! Thanks Sheryl. I too DD to her pediatrician yesterday and in addition to Gaviscon, he prescribed Zantac and Motilium for her. The combination seems to be working already, and she seems much more settled already.

honestly it depends on your baby. My first DS wouldn't take anything above a size 1 only because he wouldn't gobble too much then get sick.

Well, ladies turns out the choking and gagging is due to reflux and not flow so we're moving back to 3month plus teats again. Thanks again for the advice.

Hey lemondrops, isnt time flying? Hope things are gradually getting easier.... Anyway when i fed ds2 with bottles, initially i would use the faster flow teat as he would want quick gratification, and then switch to the slower flow one for the remainder of the feed. Avent sell teat caps, ie so you can carry a spare sterilised teat with you if you need it, hope you understand what i mean. But it worked well until he was fully used to the bigger teat, and then we'd repeat until we got to no 4! He wanted quick feeding, but definately gagged as he got tired, so this seemed to be a good solution... Hope you get it sorted! Good luck!

Hello I would stick with the 1 month teats as the fast flow of the next size up might cause your baby to gag and choke like you said. Id probably keep trying every few days on the next size up, and if they are still gagging then keep on with the smaller teat. They slowly learn to deal with the faster flow and will feel comfortable with it. It takes time and they are all different. my little one was about 3 months older than the teat sixzes recommended for her ages as she just couldnt deal with it if it came out too fast. I wouldnt worry about it going too slow, they will keep feeding until they are full. Better they have a relaxed slow feed than get upset and aggitated by the milk coming too fast - thats my opinion anyway. I hope this helps
