So our LO is 3.5 months old and has had problems with colic, reflux and bad wind. The colic is on its way out and we seem to have the reflux somewhat under control with medication but she still suffers badly with wind, especially very early in the morning. The problem is that when we give her her last bottle of the evening she always falls asleep during it so trying to wind her afterwards is impossible, which is the case with her 2 night feeds. She falls asleep towards the end of the bottle and then no matter what we do, nothing will wake her lol! I have tried winding her half way through her bottle but she starts screaming for her bottle again - spirited little thing! :)
Sooooo, from about 4am she starts to wake now with bad wind. She is continuously trying to push to pass wind but has great difficulty. This has always been the case but during the day its not so much of a problem as we can wind her. In the past few weeks this has gotten worse and she has started to wake earlier and earlier - this morning it was 5am :(
Anyone have any suggestions please as to how we could go about this?
TIA!

Well diluted camomile tea. I put some in my son's bottle who was constipated, worked for him. Glowing candle, how old was your DS when you did this? DS is suffering big time with constipation since we started solids no matter what I give him...ie no carrots, potatoes, bananas, cheese etc etc Prunes, peaches, pears, prune juice seem to be on his menu everyday and still the poor thing struggles. He's 8 months old now and I'm running out of ideas but never heard of the camomile tea..am really curious now :) Sorry for hijacking the thread ;) My son is 8 weeks n he was constipated for days n I put v diluted tea in his formula. He pooped within hours. U can google it, it's quite popular remedy. Of course we shouldn't give anything on regular basis to babies that young, but just as infacol is given to colicky babies or gripe water , this is an exception too. N at least it's a natural remedy.

I know its recommended to sleep babies on their backs, so I won't actually "recommend" that you do otherwise but I will share that I often (nervously) slept my newborn on her tummy to relieve reflux pain and from around 10 weeks she just rolled over herself so I've let her sleep that way ever since. They definitely work the gas out more easily when on their tummies. Obviously yo would never put a swaddled baby on their tummy and they would need to be on a firm, clear bed/cot, not on a fluffy blanket, soft quilt or restricted space like a moses basket. If you are not comfortable doing that you could at least put him on his tummy for 5-10 minutes after a feed and stay awake to supervise. edited by kiwispiers on 17/03/2013

Thanks Gra, I hope it does pass. I dont mind walking around with her from 5am but obviously if she can sleep better and longer without the discomfort she would be better! Can you give camomile tea to babies of that age? I thought you werent supposed to give anything like that until they reached 6 months? Daza, regarding tummy massage, do you think it would work while shes asleep? The only thing is that this is always at night when she is dressed in her comfy PJs and grobag so it'll be difficult to get to her tummy at night.... during the day, its really not an issue. Its just at night time that she wakes with it....

You could be describing my DS at 3 1/2 months here....patience!!! It will pass eventually. In the meantime, we found that DS loved this position & helped relieve his colic pain. The gentle pressure of his tummy often helped bring up his wind or just shifted it to make it less painful for him. We had to adjust it slightly to keep his head slightly higher than his body thought prevent the vomiting due to his reflux... Sorry Mmmmm, just seen your reply. Have you tried tummy massage? You have to do it a certain way, making a shape like a backwards C, I've heard it can help with wind. Also, maybe try elevating the mattress slightly with books under it at her head end. Being slightly elevated has always helped my little ones with wind.

Hi NMT, Thanks so much for your response. We use Infacol before every feed. I noticed a huge difference in the beginning so I hope that is still working its magic! We have tried lots of different positions - over my shoulder (which we tend to avoid at night as she just falls asleep!), sitting on my knee but she just falls forward in a sleepy position like a bobble head doll :) and also lying across my knews.... but none of them seem to work! When shes asleep, shes asleep! :) Burping during the day isnt an issue at all....

Hi Mmmmmm, Have you tried changing the position you hold her when you wind her? You could try holding her in a sitting position, cradled over one arm and gently massage her back with the other. Or lying across your lap, face to one side and gently massage her back with upwards strokes. My DD used to suffer terribly and I found this helped along with Infacol before a feed.

Hi Daza, Thanks for your reply. I can try to wind her for 20 minutes when shes asleep but it just doesnt work! She is completely out for the count and nothing happens at all when shes that asleep! Wish it did work! Shes quite hard to wind in the first place so asleep is just close to impossible!

Have you tried winding her when she is asleep after her bottle? None of my children have needed to be awake to bring up wind. After night feeds I just wind them as normal while they sleep. None of them have had reflux though so apologies if that's not how it works with reflux babies,
