4 months is a typical time for a growth spurt, so it could perhaps be that?
You might find this article helpful; it contains a list of the developmental signs of readiness that AussiePup mentions. http://www.kellymom.com/nutrition/solids/solids-when.html The average age of readiness is around 6 months, with some babies ready earlier and some later. However, infant feeding specialists say never introduce solids before 17 full weeks.

4.5 mths for us starting on cereal and purée apple / pear, sweat potatoe and carrot mixes. DS is a very hungry boy and he loves his food. Got the chubby legs to prove it too ;)
There are many signs to look out for to tell when your LO is ready, although even with those signs consult your Dr as there still may be some digestive issues (we found with DS, all the signs were there but when we fed him at night it gave him a big tummy ache so we moved to it to breakfast instead and did it every 2nd day until a week later, then every day then eventually at about 5 mths 1 week it was breakfast and lunch and then at nearly 6 months 3 meals a day).
Also, they grow up so quickly I feel it was only yesterday that we had DS and now he is nearing 7 mths old and I can't believe how grown up he is... enjoy the LO on milk until you really can't any more :)
eta: and by that I mean when they want way more than milk :D

We started at 6.5 months. We did BLW from the beginning and ds is now almost 10 months and eats well. DS's first meal was roast chicken, asparagus and steamed carrots.
Hi, i started my little one on pureed fruit and veg from around 5 months. shes now 14 months and a fantastic eater. I know 6 months is the recomended age but I think she was ready.
