I just found out that I'm pregnant and as per my calculations I should be around about 5 1/2 weeks. When does one go to have the first scan done? Is it at 8 weeks or only at 12 weeks. Many thanks for your help.

Thank you Ladies, I shall contact them sooner rather than later then. We have a family history of twins and I would love to know if it's one or two ;)

huge congratulations! in the uk they tell you not to go before 12 weeks. but here they scanned me straight away to confirm the pregnancy (8 weeks) and then each appointment i had, so had a scan every month at every check up! i think this is unnecessary but its nice to see the baby too...

Congratulations on your pregnancy! This often really depends on the doctor you're seeing. Unless you're very unsure about your dates or having complications like bleeding during the first trimester, an early scan isn't terribly helpful medically speaking. I know it's exciting and you're hoping to catch a glimpse of your baby, but the further along your pregnancy is the more you'll actually be able to see. In the States its pretty common for low risk women who aren't having bleeding or other complications to only have one scan done at 20 weeks. edited by Meagle on 19/02/2013
