Duties & Responsibilities
Development & Management of a Comprehensive Guidance Counseling Program
- Discuss the comprehensive school counseling program with Next Generation School’s administration
- Develop and maintain a written plan for effective delivery of the school counseling program
- Communicate the goals of the comprehensive school counseling program to NGS education stakeholders (i.e., administrators, teachers, students, parents, and community/business leaders)
- Maintain current and appropriate resources for education stakeholders at Next Generation School
- Use data to develop a comprehensive plan and program based on assessed needs and identified goals and objective
- Use the majority of time providing direct services through the Guidance Curriculum, Individual Student Planning and Preventive and Responsive Services, and the remaining time in program management, system support, and accountability[1]
- Delivery of a Comprehensive Guidance Counseling Program
Guidance Curriculum
- Provide leadership and collaborate with NGS admin, staff, and teachers in the school-wide integration of the Guidance Curriculum
- Implement developmentally appropriate and prevention-oriented group activities to meet student needs and school goals
- Incorporate into their programs the life skills that students need to be successful in the twenty-first century
Individual Student Planning
- Assist all students, individually or in groups, with developing academic, career and personal/social skills, goals, and plans
- Accurately and appropriately interpret and utilize student data
- Collaborate with parents/guardians and educators to assist students with educational, career, and life planning.
Preventive and Responsive Services
- Provide individual and group counseling to students with identified concerns and needs
- Consult and collaborate effectively with parents/guardians, teachers, administrators, and other educational/community resources regarding students with identified concerns and needs
- Implement an effective referral and follow-up process as needed
- Accurately and appropriately use assessment procedures for determining and structuring individual and group counseling services
System Support
- Provide appropriate information to school personnel related to the comprehensive school counseling program
- Assist teachers, parents/guardians, and other stakeholders in interpreting and understanding student data
- Participate in professional development activities to improve knowledge and skills
- Use available technology resources to enhance the school counseling program
- Adhere to laws, policies, procedures, and ethical standards of the school counseling profession
Accountability
- Conduct a yearly program audit to review extent of program implementation and effectiveness
- Collect and analyze data to guide program direction and emphasis
- Measure results of the comprehensive school counseling program activities and share results as appropriate with relevant stakeholders
- Monitor student academic performance, behavior, and attendance and facilitate appropriate interventions.
Additional Responsibilities
- Consult with KHDA[2] in making referrals to community agencie
- Participate in the student support team process by collaborating with admin and other departments in the school
- Participate in professional growth opportunities on an on-going basis
- Perform other duties as assigned by the appropriate administrator
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
Master’s Degree in school counseling – Required
Experience:
Minimum 2 years of experience in counseling students as individuals and in groups and experience interpreting assessment data
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Ability to plan, implement, and evaluate a guidance and counseling program based on student needs
- Proven skill in counseling individuals and groups
- Ability to conduct large group guidance sessions
- Ability to convey accurate information regarding academic and career guidance
- Ability to consult with teachers, staff, and parents regarding the developmental needs of students
- Knowledge of available resources which can be used as referrals
- Awareness of cultural diversity and its implications for school counseling
- Must be able to successfully manage multiple tasks, projects, and responsibilities
- Ability to apply critical thinking skills in rendering solutions to various issues
- Must be able to collaborate effectively with District personnel, the general public, and work with diverse groups of people
- Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
