bb2, in answer to your question re whether the occupants of the car were wearing seatbelts, yes, they were. It was a very scary - and sobering - reminder of how fragile people are, and how a life can be changed literally in an instant. I drive the Abu Dhabi - Al Ain Road on a regular basis, and agree with you it is incredible how fast - and dangerously some people drive it. I used to speed, thinking I am a careful driver, in a powerful car, etc etc. No more.
And hope you don't think I'm having a go at you! :) Just wanted to share an experience that I think of as a wake-up call.
Not having a go either. I'm just scared of drivers/driving/roads in the UAE! ;)

no i dont think you were having a go, but yes accidents here can be horrible. but you must always wear a seat belt to have any chance of surviving. i am always on at my kids to wear them and they do, they have had it drumed into the all their life having seen all that goes on here. i will not move my car if friends do not put them on....
yes the al ain road..... whoooosh.....

I think the main difference about driving in the UAE is that we get drivers from many different countries with different levels of training and rules. In some countries you have to yield before entering a roundabout, and in others it is the driver in the roundabout who has to give way to incoming drivers (this from an article by a local newspaper). It may be perfectly acceptable in some places to tailgate but I have a child in the back seat and I am very aware that he would not survive such a collision. The other day we took the turn off to KCA and you have to go on this long bend/overpass. We were going fairly fast but this white mini-bus (you know the type) came up from behind and started pushing us in mid-bend. We couldn't change lanes (it is a one lane way) and couldn't go any faster without putting us in danger of flying off the overpass. Very scary so say the least! My husband used to have a Lotus and race it for fun, so he is used to speed but even he has trouble driving around these roads.
This is so true

busybee2, understand you are a careful and experienced driver, but no matter how careful you are or how often you check your mirrors, there is always the chance that someone could hit you from behind or from the side - at 160 km/h you would be in serious trouble.
Having recently witnessed an accident in which this happened (the car that was hit was going 110 km/h, so nowehere near 160, was travelling in the right-hand lane on a road with very little traffic, in broad daylight), and seeing the enormity of the injuries it left the occupants of the car that was hit with, I have opted to slow down. None of us saw the car come up behind us (and our car has blind-spot information sensors which flash when a car is in the blind spot) - we just saw the car take the impact. Horrific.
i have been in one accident here which wasnt my fault, it was because the taxi behind me wasnt paying attention and didnt notice that there was a red traffic light and people all stopped in front of him, so i had 5 cars rear-end me, now add to the fact that the car was brand new, i was just new to the country, no mobile phone (as you couldnt get one of those for a long time) no phone at home, had a toddler strapped in car seat in back, was pregnant, husband was not in abu dhabi...... can tell you the trouble that caused just to get the car fixed and sorted out because it was not straightforward but as i was driving a honda the car wasnt damaged much.

was the car occupants wearing seat belts?
Sorry BB2, I have to disagree with you. It is NOT safe to drive at 160 unless you are in perfectly controlled conditions. Even if you are doing everything right and have reflexes like superman you still need to factor in the idiots on the road who are doing everything wrong.
At 160kmph you have no chance or time to compensate for stupid, inattentive or incompetent drivers.
I'm with Eli19 on this - 140 is too fast and given some of the driving I've seen, 120 is still too fast. Remember, the rules should cater for the driving abilities of the majority.
you can disagree but i can easily drive at that speed if i choose to. if you stay out of the fast lanes and stick to the slower lanes that nobody wants to drive in then you quite often have the lane to yourself. the road has been 160 for a good few years now, but its getting more busier because of everyone commuting from dubai because abu dhabi is expensive. if you drive along the nice new saadiyat road at 160 there isnt much traffic on it, of course you would have to slow down the speed cameras because the road has a lower speed limit but the road is fairly empty this was the same with the main highway. yes i agree that its not you its the other idiots but if you are a confident driver you can see them coming a mile off but not alot of people look in their mirror too often, otherwise if they did see someone coming they would pull out of the 3rd lane driving at 80kph and move over to the usually very empty 2 right hand lanes which is so much better to be driving in. as i said before if you have a blow out then obviously your speed becomes a factor, but if you maintain your vehicle and do not drive dangerously with bald tyres then that shouldnt happen.
BB I take it you haven't sat a uk driving test??? On the motorways in Uk, there are NOOOO fast lanes only OVERTAKING lanes and you don't go over the speed limit whichever lane you're in, whether overtaking or not!!! Why do people in in this place insist on calling the lanes FAST and SLOW- it must be a Dubai thing!???
if you are overtaking and going faster than the car in front, you over take then you pull back into the said same lane, you shouldnt undertake but in this place sometimes you dont have much choice. you lot are up for an argument which i am not getting into you do not know how i drive. i am a safe driver, i use the funny things on the side of the car, i also look in the mirror and i drive correctly (no speeding fines for me) i do not drive over the speed limits but you are forgetting that all roads do not have the same speed limits, so of course, I do go up and down depending on which road i am driving. if you want to see fast driving then drive up and down the al ain road as thats where they go flying past me all the time as i poodle along at well under the speed limit signposted not even using the 20kph buffer!

you take it wrong i do have a uk license and i learnt to drive in london
BB2, you spend a lot of time on this board saying that people must follow the laws of this country. Yet you say that you can drive over the speed limit if you chose to. How is that for consistancy? Do you get to pick which laws you keep and which you don't? Do we all get that privilege?
And, no matter how well you maintain your car, at 160km an hour how can you spot if you drive over a nail or piece of glass that could cause a blow out?
And you have justified driving at high speeds in the slow lane, an extremely dangerous practice, because of other drivers annoying habits of driving in the fast lane slowly. Just because they're at fault, does this mean you're at liberty to be at fault too?
and i didnt say that you can drive at 160 in the slow lane, i said that people should look in the mirror and move over to the slow lane.

no i do not drive over the speed limits the speed limits on some roads in abu dhabi is 160, yes they are changing some down to 140 which was what they were before. so i do not drive over the speed limits, havent got speeding fines like some people seem to.
I wonder what the stopping distance is at 160???? anyone know.
According to http://www.cactus2000.de/uk/unit/massbrm.shtml, at 160km/h, with normal braking, the braking distance is 256 m, while the stopping distance is 304m. With emergency braking, braking distance is 128m, while stopping distance is 176m. The reaction distance at that speed is 48m.
The site I'm quoting goes on to say that their calculations don't take into consideration things like road conditions, tyre conditions, weight of vehicle, etc. So these are just rule of thumb estimates.
Why do people in in this place insist on calling the lanes FAST and SLOW
Surely you've heard the phrase "life in the fast lane"? I'm going to guess that it's a difference between American and British usage. Also, I haven't driven on UK motorways, but the law in the UAE and in the US is that on a multi-lane highway (3 lanes or more), while it is safer and therefore recommended to overtake from the left, overtaking from the right is permissible.
So, while I agree that driving fast in the right-hand lanes is risky, I hesitate to condemn it with as much vehemence as other people here. Especially when you have bonkers drivers tailgating you if you try to move into the left-hand lane to pass a slower car.
Basically, the roads here are incredibly risky, no matter how you are driving yourself, because the general driving practices are pretty horrific. Which is not to say that I recommend driving at 160km/h and joining the craziness. :)

I suppose they didn't learn anything from the 200 car pile up accident of last week?
I don't think 140 kph is a reasonable speed (unless you happen to be on a plane during take off!). 120 kph is still too much. Even 100 kph is way too much in most cases. To make it even worse drivers in the UAE ignore the laws of physics about how long it takes a moving object to come to a full stop, and drive about a foot behind the car in front of theirs bullying it into either go faster or change lanes.
I am probably going to get lynched for saying this but I don't think drivers in this country are ready to handle German autobahn speeds.
i am quite safe driving at (upto) 160 but then i drive correctly, in the proper lane, look in my mirror, use the yellow things which seem to be optional here, use hand free etc... its the people that drive with feet on dash board, on the phone, kids bouncing about in front and back, not looking at the road, weaving in and out. they were bringing down the speed limit nothing to do with the pile up last week, that was purely caused by people driving too quickly for the conditions of the road, this happens when its foggy and when it rains, they do not adjust their speed to accomodate it. i saw the new signs up on the friday the day before the crash, and obviously it takes them time to get them printed and set up as well.
just because the majority of drivers here really havent been taught very well, doesnt mean that everyone is the same. also i noticed a lot of people habits change here when they are new because they just go with the flow and they acquire bad habits, like blocking people in the car parks, parking on the pavements, double parking, driving whilst talking on the phone etc etc, this wouldnt be the case if you were still in the uk because you would be penalised. i dont do that but some people do!
