Crikey!!! Better tell DH - he leaves Thursday! Well, that's awesome about the insurance side of things - I suspect DS1 will need orthodontics. And isn't LASIK the best? I had it done here about 10 years ago, but then it cost me about $5,000. Good news about the allegies, maybe it's like that because the air is so dry, I wonder... Have ordered the immunisation history certificates from Medicare, but they may take a while with all the flood stuff going on. Unfortunately the website is not giving me access to print them myself & nothing M/C's been able to do has changed that *pfft*. Once again, thanks for your help.

You more than likely will have medical insurance provided by the company for the whole family....but worth a gentle question....don't expect a quick answer though :) Our medical insurance is way better than we could possibly ever had in Australia...orthodentics covered 100% all hospital and medical and prescriptions covered 100% I even had lasik eye surgery a couple of months ago and didn't pay a cent. My daughter who suffers terrible allergies in Australia is perfect the minute she steps off the plane. Bring your immunisation records with you from Oz because the kids will need it for school. if you have any other questions re kids and medical etc I am happy to email you <em>edited by AvalonMum on 18/01/2011</em>

Thanks everyone - you are so helpful! Yikes, you are right - I am paying $28 for a month's supply of Singulair here. Didn't expect stuff to be sold over the counter like that. It is mainly teh asthma management we are interested in - Singulair, ventolin, serotide. But DS2 is a croupy kid so redipred is something I stock up on at the beginning of each winter so that is very valuable information. Oh boy... Thank you all for outlining the issues with insurance, repeats and scripts. I probably would have learned that the hard way once I got there. I will need to find out from DH's employer about the terms of medical insurance (assuming they insure the family). I am starting to get annoyed as we have no information on the terms of the assignment whatsoever yet they are bombarding him with work already! At least this way I can write all the questions up for him and ensure the i's are dotted and t's crossed. Claire, thank you so much for your kind offer. It looks like (with the exception of redipred) I will be able to get what I need, albeit at an inflated price.

I can get all my daughter's asthma medications (that I used to need a prescription for in Australia) over the counter here. She doesn't use singulair but a lot of medication that you need a script for in Oz is sold over the counter here. Antibiotics, cortisone creams etc. I just phoned the chemist and they have singulair granules (paed) and 5mg and 10mg in stock and no prescription is required. 220 dhs is about $65 so it is not cheap but depending on the medical cover you have it can be claimed back. If you are covered and want to claim it back then you need a prescription from a doctor. They don't do repeats here and from memory (got caught out once) prescriptions are valid only for 2 weeks so you need to see the doctor each time you want to buy some more and claim it back. Maybe others on here know more about that.....I just buy it over the counter and don't bother with the scripts. HTH the other thing that you cannot get here that you may need if you have an asthmatic is redipred prednisolone....not even on a script...they don't know what it is (stand to be corrected) and as I had a croupy child I felt better having some of that with me when I first came here and was not familiar with local doctors and hospitals etc and finding your way around here can take some time :) but eventually it all falls into place!

You can get Singulair here, I seem to remember it is about AED 220 for a months supply. I remember thinking thank goodness for medical insurance. I think if you bring a copy of the prescription along with a decent supply you should be okay. Somewhere on one of the government sites is a list of medicines that you cannot bring into the country. I will try and find it.

You can see a Dr without being resident here - you just have to pay! My Mum needed a dr once when she was over and we were never asked for residency - just made an appointment filled in the registration form and paid the bill! You can get most drugs direct from a pharmacy without a prescription. If you list the drugs you need I am happy to check that they are stocked here for you when I next go into a pharmacy or others - especially from Australia - will be able to tell you if the drug is readily available here. But yes, you can just go in and buy over the counter. This is what I do for my little boys asthma inhaler.

My DH and DS1 are both asthmatics. DH is also on regular medication for some other stuff. My DS1 takes a non-steroid asthma preventative tablet every morning (Singulair) which of course we will need to keep going over there. 1. Can I get local prescriptions completed by our Australian Doctor filled in Dubai? 2. If my Australian Doctor writes us a "Certificate of Need", will this enable us to march into a chemist and get our medicines in Dubai? 3. If the answer is "no" to the above 2 questions, can I bring in 6 months' supply of medicine to Dubai? (Bearing in mind the Australian law may not allow me to buy that much in advance anyway) 4. If the answer to 1, 2 and 3 is no, then I assume I need to find a local doctor who will write a local script. Can I see a local doctor if I am on a tourist visa? (Just not sure how long it will take to process a residence visa). As always, thank you all for the benefit of your knowledge.
