When it comes to life changing consequences and a possible jail term I would do whatever it took, regardless of their age, to protect them. If, on the other hand, you mean making decisions about less serious matters then in my home country they are legal adults at 18. However as people mature at different rates a parent can take that into consideration when it relates to important issues. I totally agree. It is a mother's instinct to protect her children (no matter how old they are) with something as serious as the thread on REAL maid troubles, I would do whatever it took. If, on the other hand, we were in another country with less severe consequences, I may be inclined to let him figure things out on his own.....

I'm not saying I think it's necessarily a good idea, but on the day he reached 16, the age of consent in England, a university friend of mine's father took him to a brothel. (Always made me wonder about the Pa's relationship with his own wife, mind.) An older friend of mine who visits Italy often, told me years ago that this is the norm for most boys to have their first taste of s3x in a brothel, especially with the rich! Mind you in Dubai, if it was my son I'd rather he had it with the maid rather than a russian down rolla street!:\:

I love my sister's relationship with her children. She gave them significant amount of freedom and trust compares to what we ourselves had when we were their age. In return, her children are all open to her and her DH and never abuse the freedom and trust given to them. 4 goes/went to colleges....youngest one waiting for his turn. I am trying my best to have the same relationship with my DD 8-) I love my parents but a lot of time I do feel like I was and still am leading a double life.

if 20 year old man living with his parents, then yes, his mom still has rights to interfere in any affairs under the household roof. Yes, that goes for any of us, whatever age, who are living under someone else's roof - we should respect the rules of the household.

I know this is not sensible, and not the answer youre looking for, BUT.... after this week, lil miss can stay home til shes 35, in her room. Which rather slightly clashes with her plan of marrying her now boyfriend (she is just 6!) in the nude at the beach when she is 18. And the 18 was the compromise.

Our boys will still depend on us, financially, when they are 20. They'll be in university and fully funded by us. DH and I will do everything to ensure they grow into mature and responsible adults, but it's not a case of saying ok, fine, you're 20 today so you are a fully grown adult and therefore responsible for all your affairs and from this point onwards we will no longer be providing financial support and you must move out from our house and support yourself. I imagine it will be similar as to what it was like for us, that the early twenties are a transitional period. edited by Tallybalt on 19/01/2011

we were given responsibility gradually - bank accounts and the free choice of what to do with our "allowances" (all £2.50 of it! lol) from the age of 12, and so forth... sometimes we'd make good decisions, sometimes not, but we had the choice. From about 16-18, depending on the issue, we were allowed to do whatever we pleased (within limits), although at home, under my father's roof, there were some things that weren't allowed.

When my oldest turns 18 in a few months she is on her own... :)))) We were treated as adults when we turned 16. Thats what I was thinking would be about right, when I turned 18, although I always had/have the love and support of my parents, they were happy for me to run my own life (with strong suggestions on what they thing is right) and make my own decisions at the end of the day. Although I think the OP has a very awkward position, the way some of the posters are coming across is like a 20 yo should still be reprimanded and treated like a teenager rather than adult...

Can't keep them children for ever....at 20 you are an adult and should be able to conduct your own affairs.( no pun intended) I was responsible for myself from 16 would like to think I've done ok :) edited by cat-trax on 19/01/2011

stop treating your children as minors and start treating them as adults? Just wondering what/when people think is appropriate... I was just thinking over the thread and thought, hold on we're talking about a 20 year old here, fine he's still young and obviously not doing something mother is happy with, but at what point do you say, you're an adult, I'm not happy with what you're doing, if you want to do it thats fine again, you're an adult, but not in my house?
