As Aussies, we always register each time we travel (regardless of country) on the Aussie website that was talked about earlier (smarttraveller.com.au). Takes a couple of minutes to do and it may just help the Govt to know you are there in an emergency, send you sms or email warnings and in the unfortunate chance you need to get emergency help out - gives them an idea of how many Aussies are in the country.

Our Department of Foreign Affairs has all our details, so when our passports go into another country, we are flagged as being in that country. It is also good that they have our details in case anything happens here. For Australia - DFAT - you can do it online in a few minutes, could save you and your family a heap of grief. I am sceptical of the accuracy of customs reporting systems in some countries and would still register online and with the local consulate (if there is one) in under-developed or troublesome countries regardless.

Hardly, not in the UK, wales, Scotland, Most of Scandinavia etc etc!!! Yet. If you are a brit living abroad you would hardly need to tell the BE if you were travelling to the UK would you? For goodness sake if you are travelling in certain countries go ahead other wise use you brain and contact your embassy if you get into trouble. Immigration will know who and how many of each nationality is in a country.

I have had the nasty experience of trying to track family members after the 2004 tsunami and wouldn't put the stress on top of the stress for any of my family or friends. Sorry to hear you had to do that. I was just thinking that as well. Even if, heaven forbid, someone had to locate you for some family emergency when no one else knew how to reach you. Thanks. Exactly. It just opens up a few more channels and saves time, especially when loved one are already bricking it.

Well I went on to this web page and registered a few weeks ago - seems you can enter all your future trip details in there, as well as your residential details when living abroad: http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/travel-and-living-abroad/staying-safe/Locate/ It says that they let the British Embassy of the place you are living in/traveling to next, know your details.. <em>edited by chizz on 31/01/2011</em>

That sounds a great idea, not sure the BE has one but they do advise keeping the embassy number with you when you travel. Which is fine when the phone lines in the country are working. UGH.

Embassy in the UAE or in the country I'm traveling to? No, but I have the emergency number of my UAE embassy in my mobile phone as well as the emergency number of state department of my home country... So if something happens - I should be able to contact them (of course if the mobile network is up / I don't lose my mobile).

Don't think the Brits can do it for just a hoilday, only if they are resident. Normally in a crisis you just contact the BE to let them know you are there and ask what to do next. The BE normally has someone on the ground PDQ in these situations to help Brits. <em>edited by SarkySue62 on 31/01/2011</em>
