I'm a bit confused about something. Are atm cards and debit cards the same thing? I was told I have an atm card but I have also used it to make payments at stores, restaurants etc so doesn't that make it a debit card? My bank has told me that I can not use it for online bookings/purchases etc.

So I asked "okay then what do I need to do to get a debit card?" and they said "this IS a debit card" :\:

A debit card allows you to withdraw money from an ATM as well as pay for purchases online/in a store HSBC gives you an ATM card and a credit card only. its their way of making you pend on a credit card and not giving you an option of having a debit card to pay for things (this depends on what type of account you have though) Incorrect - HSBC do give debit cards - I have one! But you have to have the Advance account to get one.

What I don't understand with using it as a Debit Card is that some shops require a pin number and others don't. It's not at all secure if there is no pin required!

The guy on the other end said pretty much the same thing, that I can try and see if it works, but its not advisable to use it online because of safety concerns and also because they may/may not block my card. I don't think I want to risk it, knowing the competency of the customer service people..

I have a debit card which can also be used as an atm card however atm transactions have an extra charge.

If your ATM card says 'Visa' or 'Mastercard' over and above Electron, it is a debit card too. They do work on sites that accept debit card but its usually not recommended cause you leave your entire bank balance open to possible fraud. At least with your credit card its limit is your credit card limit and usually you get a call to confirm big transactions and they can be contested. With a debit card, even if you contest the money is already taken out of your account, so you can somehow be worse off..

I have a card which is an ATM card and also a debit card. I can use it to withdraw money and pay for items (and not put in pin number, just sign) BUT I cannot buy things online or pay bills with it. So we got a credit card as well..... (My Aussie debit card allows me to purchase items online and I thought the ATM/Debit card would do the same but not this one.....
