My mother in law called me yesterday and wants to know if there are any really good doctors here in the UAE. Her close friends daughter has just been diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. All the doctors say there is nothing they can do. Has anyone heard of anyone here.
Thank you

Last month my husband was diagnosed with colon cancer. As he doesn't have a residence visa here, he could not get medical insurance here, so we got that from the UK. When diagnosed, the insurance company medivac(ed) us back to the UK. We saw our GP there who, with all of the test results already done, said he'd FastTrack him through the NHS system. Our first preliminary appointment was given for 2 weeks time. We decided that it was too urgent to wait for the NHS, so we flew back to Dubai and had the operation done at Cedars International Jebel Ali by Professor Gunther Keininger, tel: 04 881 4000. The cancer had already spread 5cms down, and possible further up the other side too, so waiting on the NHS could have been fatal. The operation was done and my husband was on the road to recovery, before he'd have even seen a specialist in the UK. I do not know if the professor, who is Head of Surgery at Cedars International does Brain Tumor's, but he is an absolutely fantastic and caring person. The fees at Cedars were 1/3 of the estmated cost of one of the large, very well known hospitals in Dubai. I did not encounter any traffic jams visiting the hospital and I parked outside my husband's bedroom window every day. The professor visited my husband 3 or 4 times a day to check on his recovery. We had the results of the histology yesterday and the Professor managed to remove the whole tumour, and lymph nodes and there was no spread of the cancer anywhere else. My husband should make a 100% recovery. I can't recommend Cedars International Jebel Ali high enough. They are fantastic. edited by ShellFC on 17/03/2011 Because colon cancer is the same a brain tumour in a child?

Thank you all very much. They are in the States. So I will pass on all this information to them. Why would you begin to think that treatment would be any better here? The US would be the best place possible, i hope they find an answer for the young lass, the post below looks well worth checking out further.

This is a devastating diagnosis, but there are miracles every day in the treatment of brain tumors. My brother was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor, and treated at MD Anderson Cancer Center in the US. As his caregiver I accompanied him to doctor's visits, hospital stays, and got to know his medical team very well, as well as other patients under their care. He lost his battle after 16 months, but many have survivied and live normal lives. After my brother died, I went to work at MDACC for two neuro-oncologists for several years before coming to the Middle East; patients from around the world come to MDACC because it is one of the best in the world. I will email you and feel free to contact me for more information and / or assistance in any way. Also, my colleague here in the UAE has a relative who is a Neurologist in Al Ain, and I can put you in touch with them as well. Just let me know. <em>edited by 49M&Ms on 17/03/2011</em>

I'm very pleased that you had a good experience at Cedars ShellFC, and am thrilled that your husband is well on the road to recovery. However, I had the complete opposite experience with that hospital. The bed I was put into on admission in an emergency case scenario had someone elses blood all over the sheets, long black hair on the pillow, the walls and interiors were filthy. I appeared to be somewhat of a novelty as every little man and his dog made an apperance to gawk...I'm talking cleaners etc, not Dr's. Before any medication was given to me, each and evrytime, I was made to get out of bed, shuffle with my iv stand to the payment counter and que to pay for it, along with about 60 squillion labourers. I had barely had a diagnosis before the hospital accountant was at my bedside wanting 10s of thousands of dh's up front for an operation. Needless to say there was no chance or way in hades that i was letting anybody in that filthy dump cut me open. Quite frankly I wouldnt be having any serious treatment here and a brain tumour certainly is VERY serious. OP, I do hope you get the information you need and the child gets the best help. Echo SalsB..if a fundraiser is started or needed...count us in.

If she's in London then there's a great doctor called Professor Thomas, he is based in Lister hospital near Knightsbridge. If you'd like his contact number then I'd be happy to give it to you. Also, about NHS I think they're great, I had bad experience with a private hospital as they kept saying i had a bruise but i didn't believe it so i went to NHS to check and they straight away knew what it was from the scan and refered me to another specialist.

DD I don't agree with your statement about availability of treatment in the uk through nhs. Everyone I know including myself got prompt investigation, diagnosis and treatment and excellent care for all critical medical needs. Long waiting lists do exist for non emergency treatment but at least we don't have to bankrupt ourselves to get good medical treatment. Sorry this thread has veered off subject, I hope the OP gets good news for her friend's daughter.

I don't think it is the quality of care with NHS that is the issue. No one disputes the UK has top flight care. I think the issue is availability. I am a cancer survivor who was treated in the US. During treatment, I could not believe the number of Brits and Canadians that were also being treated in the US at one of the best facilities in the world. When I asked why they were in the US, the universal answer was availability. While they would be comfortable in the UK getting care, it could take months to be seen and treated whereas care in the US is available quickly, in terms of days o weeks rather than months. So rather than wait a long time with a worsening and potentially deadly situation, people chose to come to the US. I think that is fair and accurate.

I unfortunatly know a lot about brain tumors and how hard it is to accept sometimes that there is no hope. A brain tumor which is badly located can not be operated because the surgery will cause dramatic damage to the kid's brain. If surgeons don't want to operate it also means that they already know what it is on the IRM and others examinations. Which is not a good pronostic. Your friend have to send the IRM (by DHL and very quicly) to a hospital. Necker in Paris in very well known for brain tumors for kids (it has to be a hospital for the kids). If it is obvious (like what you are saying), they will not need to see the kid. Usually neurosurgeons totally understand that you need a second diagnostic. Your friends will need support, affection.

A friend of mine was diagnosed with a brain tumour a few months back, diagnosed here in Dubai, a few days ago she just had surgery with one of the best know doctors in the world in South Africa. He is well know and world reknowned. The medical profession in South African is fantastic, especially in comparison to the UK NHS. Let me know if you would like details. Take huge offence at your comment about the NHS it's simply not true or fair. Ever so sorry SW - I have just had some bad experiences with the NHS - like being misdiagnosed! Although I would say I love my NHS GP and miss him dearly!

Geneva University Hospital (HUG) has renowned neurosurgeons, I believe. Depending on the circumstances, they may well treat for free or a nominal fee. http://neurochirurgie.hug-ge.ch/eng/mission_prestations/mission_prestations.html

She should go to the US, UK or Germany then not here, specialist neuro's willing to take on such things will not be here. Hope she can get treatment somewhere. Do they have insurance or are they UK nationals? Where were they diagnosed? How tragic. <em>edited by Sticky Wicket on 16/03/2011</em>
