I currently have my LO in a maxi cosi cabriofix and have bought the next size IE pearl. My LO is 7 months but weighs 9.1kg and is very tall. Is it safe to put her in the forward facing car seat now or should i wait until 9 months?

yup, keep her in the rear-facing for as long as possible, even if she needs to bend her legs.

New research has just come out (American Academy of Pediatrics) saying rear facing is safest up to 2 years, as their little necks are not as able to withstand the forward force of being in accident before then. This probably doesnt help as you already have your forward facing seat, but just wanted to let you know the new recommendations. Edited to add, not sure if there are even any seats rear facing that support a child up to 2 without having a knee up each nostril! edited by Kelly_C on 31/03/2011

Check what weight is recommended for the new seat. If your LO is this weight or more then they are safe. I would just make sure they can support their head well before moving them. The backwards ones are the safest option though so I'd keep them in there as long as possible.
