I bought them from the Dubai Garden Centre just over 3 weeks ago to decorate the empty balcony, part of getting the place in a fairly good shape for when the MIL visits. Now they are droopy and not...
Petunia may get too wet or experiencing drainage problems. I recommend examining the soil and taking necessary steps to address the issue.
Thank you ladies. So it's the end of the season for petunias in Dubai then...ok, that explains a lot.
Try deadheading your petunias to keep them going a while longer (you pinch off the nearly dead blossoms to encourage new ones).
Yes...deadheading...I made that DD's job :D
Petunias don't like the heat. So now it is the end for this flower.
Bougainvilleas nead water every day but not too much and full sun. In the shade, the leaves become light green or yellow and the flowers lose their colour.
Never let the water at the bottom of the pot.
I hope it will help you. Sorry for my english !
I guess that's the right thing to do with that plant food then. I never used it so it's hard to give advice. I certainly wouldn't feed a bougainvillea that often though.
I only ever went to the Garden Centre once and the utter numpty who served me had no idea what he was talking about so I never went back. ;)
Interesting that nada's experience is that bougainvilleas need lots of water. We had a few in enormous pots for almost five years. They were outside the boundary fence so occasionally watered when I could be bothered dragging the hose out there and rained on if they got lucky. I fed them *maybe* twice a year. I added fresh soil twice in those years. 11 months of the year they were in full, glorious bloom; one month during 'winter' they'd calm down and drop a lot of leaves.
If the soil is wet and they are drooping, they are being overwatered. If the soil is dry and they droop, they are desperate for a drink. ;)
Make sure they are not left standing in trays of water. If you have drip trays under the pots, try to elevate the pots so they are sitting above the water. I used to put pot feet or broken pavers in the tray, under the pot.
OK, now I'm confused.
I am using...where's that box...Phostrogen All Purpose Plant Food...it's a soluble granule/powder, not slow release. It's what the shop assistant in the garden centre recommended I use, I was short of time, and didn't really have a proper browse through the range of feed they stocked. I've only fed them twice in the near 4 weeks I've had them.
The plants were already potted when I bought them, and I just kept them in there. The pots for the petunias aren't big big, but they look big enough (based on my limited experience in UK). The pot for the bougie looks a tad small for the size of the plant....don't ask me what litre pots they are though...no idea....
You could also be over-watering and over-feeding!
In really hot climates, plants in pots that don't 'breathe' will almost literally boil if there's too much water around their roots. Water needs to be able to evaporate from the pot to keep the roots cool. Most plants will do best in [u'>big[/u'> pots that are not glazed and soil kept just damp.
What fertiliser are you using? Even heavy feeders like petunias won't need much if you're using a slow release fertiliser.
Bougainvilleas THRIVE on neglect. Water only when almost dry, feed sparingly & rarely and pretty much ignore them until they become messy and need a good haircut.
you really need to plant them in BIG tubs/pots. I brought about 20 hanging baskets from my house in uk but they would dry out within an hour and you'd be watering them non stop hence the reason you don't see hanging baskets here! Shame as i love them.
Thanks NDNDND. I've kept them in the pots and not planted them. They should be OK in pots right? I used to have petunias in hanging baskets in the UK and as long as I remembered to water and feed and dead head them, they performed really well and kept going all through summer. Never had bougies before...
Mmmm....sounds like I'm not watering them enough then...DH has been telling me that I'm over watering....

i planted my petunias in November and have looked beautiful - i just started pulling them out today as they're past their best and dying. It takes about 8 weeks for them to look lovely and bushy so by then it'll be too hot and they'll just fry. I tried planting them in March a few years ago but it was too hot for them to really get going. Bougies do drop their leaves naturally but they also like plenty of water! Petunias also need watering morn & eve.
