Ok so DS is 4 and is constantly nose picking, I know the are all doing it at school and I think this is where the name calling is coming from. Anyone got any good tips on how to stop these nasty habits?

AD i've been trying that for a couple of months now but to no avail, he told me this morning I was a rubbish mummy and told DH he was stupid and selfish so he's on a role and as for the nose i'm tempted to put mustard on his finger ;-) It could take months!! When I was a teacher here, I had a student who picked his nose all the time. I am not exaggerating. It took me months of repeating several times a day, and eventually he just stopped and became a much more social child after that.

AA, you may have to wait a while but next time your LO gets a tummy bug, it was definitely all down to the finger up the nose ;) - that has totally worked with DS as he thinks that is what caused his recent virus and hasn't done it since! I'll definitely try that, I have sown the seeds of that but he seems to think i'm kidding. HAK I will try offering alternatives where possible and see if that helps...kids who'd have em!

as for the nose i'm tempted to put mustard on his finger ;-) either that or Vicks! Seriously though, yes it's not socially acceptable, but a habit like that is difficult to break. I'm having to deal with a fascination for bottoms at the moment. Meh. As for name calling, I come down on it really hard and it's a bit of a Do Not Pass Go moment - all fun stops and I tell her it's not acceptable and that she has to say sorry straight away. Fortunately DD doesn't seem so inclined at the moment. I also encourage her to express herself clearly and correctly... so if DS is mucking around being funny, DD has been known to say "Stupid [DS'>!" and laugh, so I go through the above and add "he's not "stupid" he's being funny, so you can say "Funny DS" or "Silly DS""

Just keep on repeating: "Don't pick your nose. It's gross and people will think you are gross." Eventually he will get it, but it may take a while. As for the name calling, it's basically the same advice. "Don't be mean to others. You will not have any friends." If it continues, a time-out is warranted or use whatever punishment is the norm at your house.
