We are currently renting a car here which I havent driven yet as I stupidly put the paper bit of my lisence into storage which I can't get to. Ive spoken to the DVLA who have faxed me some documents to say Im able to drive in the UK but thats all it says. My husband phoned up the car rental company and they said I can already drive it.They didnt even ask for my name. Does this sound right? I dont want to go out and start driving for an accident to happen and then find out Im not insured and I shouldnt of been driving in the first place!

Even when you get your visa you will need to show your license to get a UAE one, unless they accept your documentation.

Ive decided to wait til I have my visa. Ive been told I will more than likely have it tomorrow and then I can get my UAE license. That way there is no misunderstandings and I know Im doing everything properly. Definately do NOT want a weeks jail time!

BUT, according to Dubai Police, you are not licensed to drive unless you have a license to show when pulled over. IF anything happens, I would not want to be in your shoes. They can legally hold you until you produce a license. Driving without a license can get you a weeks jail time.

I havent actually got my visa yet, I went for my medical on monday. Do you know where I would stand on this? Would it be better to just wait til Ive got my visa do you think? Not scaring me, this is exactly why Ive asked just incase!! So thanks :o) Actually, it is the opposite to what you think... you are currently okay to drive on your UK license (providing your visa hasn't been completed here)but once you get your residency here is finalised, you will need to get your drivers license here to be covered. HTH

In the UAE the car is insured not you, so long as you are entitled to drive here in the UAE. If you have your UAE residency then you are no longer covered under your UK drivers license and you must apply immediately for a UAE license, it is automatically transferred for UK citizens. Sorry to scare you - If you are a resident and were to have an accident without the UAE license then you would have to appear in court, this all happen to a friend of mine and she got a huge fine of about AED 20,000
