I know there have been previous threads on NYC which I have already taken some notes from.

But I am heading there in three weeks, dh is on business so I'll have five days on my own. I need ideas of things I can do on my own? Whats the best way to get around if your on your own? Is the subway ok? Were staying near central park.

Also what things are cheap out there, im sure i heard mac make-up is much cheaper out there but i compared the price here to there and it didnt seem massivley cheaper? Im hoping to do alot of shopping :)

Any ideas, thoughts muchly appreciated!!

Lover of the Malibu :)

Don't go to NYC and miss the Frick Museum. An often overlooked hidden treasure. Very close to where you are staying. If you want an unforgettable shopping experience, get the bus from Port Authority Bus Station and have a day out at Woodbury Common Outlet Shopping Mall. That's the infamous place for "shopping in New York".

You may have seen my suggestions before, but as well as the others, Staten Island ferry trip (v cheap) free tour of behind the scenes at Grand Central Station (you walk behind the huge station clock, where there are squash-courts in what used to be a ballroom!), the Frick Museum and the Met (as in Metropolitan Museum of Art). The Rough Guide to New York is full of good ideas for different, cheap or free things (my first two suggestions are from there, I think!) - or it was, 30 years ago!!

You can buy a tourist pass online and visit many attractions for a discounted price. Helicopter outover the statue of liberty, hudson river cruise, walk over the manhattan bridge, wall street, stock exchange, radio city hall, SOHO, MOMA, top of the rock, times square, canal street for fake goods, china town for the best chinese food, flat iron building, empire state, MACY's show passport to get disount vouher booklet. Must make sure you go to the theatre, get discount tickts fromTKTS booth in times square at 3pm for same day shows. Must go to woodbury common outletmall, take coach from port authoruty for 1 hour and get ready to shop!!! Love NYC been around 20 times, am v jelous as wont be back for a while. edited by nutty on 21/04/2011

Its very safe! You will have a great time and the weather will be divine! One of the best and hidden treasure in nyc, is the lower east side tenament walking tour-google it! You should try seeing the MET too, Central Park, and for some good shopping hit soho, and for bargains head down to Century 21-its right across the street from the World trade center site. N/R train goes there...and I am pretty sure the stop is Rector street.

The weather should be lovely then, take advantage of it and walk everywhere you can! I think it's quite safe nowadays, but we'd need a real New Yorker to let us know about that!
