At what age did you give your LO juice? My 22 mo has only been on milk and water but is now starting to ask for juice which I assume she is picking up at nursery. What do I need to look for/be careful of in juices? Are the Ceres Kiddie's juices a good choice? Do I still need to dilute them further? Thanks x

Thank you everyone. Yasmine - My DD also loves the fresh fruit smoothies I make her. As HAK said, it was more the shop bought juices I was referring to like Ceres etc. I think I'll stick with milk and water as much as I can and give her juice when she asks for it or when I need to get her hydrated i.e. when they're sick and refusing water etc. Thanks again x

I dont get what the problem is. There could well be some confusion because some people also call squashes "juice" (so like the bottles of Robinson's or, er... Tang that you then have to dilute to taste)... these drinks are indeed pretty worthless nutritionally and because they're essentailly pure sugar, they're just as bad as giving kiddo a can of coke (well, maybe not quite as bad!). Fresh fruit juices are great... in moderation, and as long as they're not swilling around the child's mouth for ages (sipping) because they are very acidic, for all the yummy goodness.

I dont get what the problem is. My son is 1 year old and when I squeeze juice I always make a little extra for him and he loves it. Also juice of green apples. I even made a milkshake with banana and avocado and he just loves it. He drinks plenty plenty of water and never refuses water because I give him some juice. He also eats fruits after lunch and dinner. Dont see anything wrong in fruit juices. My doctor told me that water is good but if he has a fever or has been dehydrated juice is better.

Don't forbid it if the kid wants it, just give it in moderation and dilute it if you like. You know that "forbidden fruit is always tastier"

I would hold off as long as you can and dilute anything with plenty of water, once you start there will be no going back. Agreed, or avoid it altogether. There's no real nutritional benefit and for some toddlers, once they get a taste for what's essentially sugar-water, there may well be a battle to get them to drink water again. edited by Green-ish on 02/10/2011

IMO, don't start giving your toddler juice. Just give him/her water and milk. edited by AnonDubai on 02/10/2011 it's not poison, though - we're talking juice here, as in fruit juice, not "squash" which is full of gunk? I don't think juice is bad. Of course her child can still drink it. I just don't think it's good to make a habit out of it. That is only my opinion. exactly... as with anything, in moderation. A glass a day with a meal is a great "treat" and a great source of vitamin C... I always find that if they kids have gone off whatever fruit I've presented to them, they can "catch up" with some fruit juice.

I let my little one have diluted down juice if I feel she hasnt drunk enough in the day so an encouraging treat to get more fluid in her. I always go straight back to water though and she never grumbles. Seems she can take it or leave it

I found that my two will take or leave juice, but will always ask for milk! Check the ingredients list for the juices - even allegedly fresh and/or "pure" juices, because an awful lot of them have added sugar. If the juice is a thick, syruppy nectar, dilute even more. It's also a good idea to let them drink juices at meal-times, rather than sipping them over the course of a few hours, as this allows their saliva to neutralise the acids and prevent tooth decay. Never, ever give juice in a bottle with a teat because again, this encourages them to just sip it in dribs and drabs which is really bad for their teeth. edited by Hello.Again.Kitty on 02/10/2011
