Are you allowed nail polish on your nails and toes for natural delivery?

I had polish on hands (light colour) and feet (dark colour) when I gave birth a couple of weeks ago in city. No-one uttered a word about it and they had to lift my feet onto the stirrups as i had an epidural so they would have seen it.

I had a section last year, my nails and toes are always painted, however my Dr assured me that NO polish on my hand nails were allowed! It is for the exact reason that Meals stated... When i was in surgery getting prep'd, my DH held my hand and the probe came off my finger! Naturally the heart machine went crazy and the first thing they checked was my finger tips! Then realized what had happened ;)

Just to be sure, I called the maternity ward and they said paint away! Colour is also fine as you only need to remove if you go under general and now a days there it's never heard of to go under general when giving birth. She also said it's fine for a caesar. YAY! Now I can cover my calcium marked nails!

I had polish on my toes when I was admitted on Saturday and my doctor said if I was planning a manicure, not to have polish just in case we ended up delivering early. But that was C section, not natural. I guess if you want to err on the side of caution, leave a finger or a toe bare! :D

It's just for the oxygen saturation probe - it can sometimes have difficulty getting a good reading if it can't "see" through the polish. Maybe just use a light color :)

I had scheduled c-section at City Hospital in May and had nail polish on my fingers and toes and wasn't asked to take it off. I had a manicure and pedicure a few days before the delivery as I knew I wouldn't be able to go again for a while!! edited by alimart on 02/11/2011

Most hospitals dont allow it in case of you having to go to theatre for emergency delivery

Not sure, I would certainly think so. You could give them a quick bell on 800 THE CITY in case nobody knows for sure.
