Baby refuses to Nap

My little 10 month old guy has always been a champion napper ; Two 2 hour naps during the day (early morning after his breakfast) and one in the afternoon. He would also wake up twice during the night for milk. I would put him to bed at 8pm- he would wake up at 2 am for a bottle and then again at 5 am and then he would be up by 8am.
For the passed 2 weeks- he refuses to nap at all during the day and is waking up more frequently at night.
Despite being utterly exhausted during the day-(yawning- sleepy watery eyes) he just has a fit everytime I put him down in his crib. I've tried everything from trying to put him to sleep with me in bed- to taking him out on walks so he can sleep in his stroller (or at least get more tired from the outing), warm baths, bottle, reading to him...he just rubs his eyes continuously- yawns all the time but will under no circumstances take a nap. Not even for 20 minutes. On top of that- he is waking more frequently at night and I'm just afraid that he is not getting his daily sleep requirements. I checked to see if anything else could be bothering him in his crib- nothing. He's not gassy- his behaviour is the same (same happy giggling baby) and nothing seems to be bothering him- except that he's so tired. I thought he could be teething- but he has no signs of that either. I have an appt with his pediatrician next week but I was just wondering if any of you have had this issue and what you did. I'm really at a loss and done everything I could think of.

No problem. :) I have a couple of friends that say the amber necklaces make no difference and quite a few, like myself, that swear by them. So I hope that they work for your little one. I don't know if it's something you're in to but we use homeopathic medicines also with our little one and are really happy with how they work. We use the Hylands teething tablets and gel and a few other things. I buy them off of iHerb.com from the States and they arrive here in just a couple of days. Might be worth checking into if it sounds like something you'd like.

Thank you soo soo much for the tip about the Chamomile, I had read about it as well. I will also get the necklace you're speaking of- I've seen lots of little one's wearing them but was always skeptical about wether they actually worked or not. Iwill definately give it a shot. I'm really happy his sleeping is back on track- at least now I know what the problem was :)

Aw, that's great. I'm glad that you found out what it was. Is it getting better now? When our daughter is getting a new tooth in we freeze some Chamomile tea on a wash cloth and give it to her to chew on before bed. It seems to help with the discomfort and she sleeps better. We also use an Amber Teething Necklace. They also help with the pain. While they are sleeping you can use an anklet or use the necklace as an anklet under a footed sleep suit or you can just have the baby wear them during the day. There is a lady in Dubai who sells them: Amber in Duabi http://www.facebook.com/pages/Amber-in-Dubai/184750998246860?sk=info We swear by ours. :)

In my experience, change in my baby's sleep routine is due to teething discomfort. Going out for a walk or putting him on the toddler swing in the garden always helped distract him for the discomfort. Have you noticed any new teeth coming out? Things will get better once the teeth pop up but when the molars come out at around 15 months, might be a bit difficult again. Good luck!

thanks so much smilies for sharing your experience. Nothing at all negative has ever happened to the little guy in his crib. I had lowered the matress a few weeks prior just because I feel he can start standing up in it now and could potentially climb out. Maybe he's not comfortable sleeping lower than he used to? In fact he used to quite enjoy sitting in his crib and babbling and playing with his stuffed toy. I have tried to let him cry it out- but he can go on and on without stopping...and i don't know how comfortable I am leaving him to cry for nap times. sometimes I think it would counterproductive? if he starts associating crying and being misearble with his crib? I'm a first time mom, so I don't know what the correct way to do this is :( The passed 2 days have been a little better- i'm taking him out on long walks about an hour after breakfast (I run my errands) and when we get home he has his lunch and goes to sleep for at least an hour. At least now he's getting in one nap during the day and is not waking up at 2 am anymore... If I can stretch out his nap time for 2 hours I will be happy...i guess i just need to tire him out more *sigh*

I remeber my DD changing a lot between 9-12months with her morning nap routine. It used to be 7am wake 8.30am nap then allof a sudden it was more like 9.30/10am (i watched her sleep cues, yawning, rubbing eyes etc) in the space of a few days.I found it helped to be consistent with her routine and winding down. I also remember the afternoon nap was taken some days but often not and DD was grumpy for weeks till her morning nap moved to 1, 3hour lunch time nap and no afternoon. I think its a transitional time for them nap wise. Perhaps also think about maybe your LO has developed a fear of his bed? Its possible, has anything negative happened that you could relate to? What is your feelings on letting him cry? My DD would babble for ages then have the odd angry cry or 2 and then if left would take the hint and go to sleep.
