Can anyone tell me what to expect with this scan and bloods pls? Is it an internal scan or not? Also, concerning the blood tests, where do they take blood from please? Feeling a little nervous about it and just wanted to know what to expect.
TIA!

Thanks so much ladies. I have had a couple of scans so I can handle that. I was a little worried about the blood test - wasnt sure if it was a simple blood test that they take from my arm or if they try to take blood from the actual baby - that must be another test. Thanks so much - that really puts my mind at rest! Happy to know that you are relaxed now upon getting the information from the ladies. Just to reassure you, don't get scared...NT scan is just an ultrasound scan on the tummy to measure your baby. With regards to the blood test, the blood is taken from your arm, processed and the results are combined with the ultrasound scan results and presto...you get the risk assessment full report. If you are a bit scared with the blood test...for sure the clinic where you're going to has someone who is great in handling this...don't hesitate to request. good luck and keep us posted.

Just want to add something about my experience with insurance for NT scan. I had it at the fertility clinic which is outside network. The insurance company refused to reimburse saying there is no justification for the scan. When I checked with my OB , apparently there's no justification. In Dubai, everyone does it. So I ended up paying :(

You are talking about the double screening at 12ish weeks? The scan is external, you need a full-ish bladder beforehand which usually mean going to the toilet about an hour before the scan and then immediately drinking 500mL of water. This helps them see more clearly. Your baby is quite formed by this stage and they will probably be able to show you hands, feet, head, eyes etc so it can be quite exciting. Too early to tell the gender though. The blood test you usually do before or at the same time as the scan, from as early as around 10 weeks I think. It is just a regular blood test, they take the blood from your arm, and it is not at all painful. If you haven't had any other pregnancy blood tests and you hate blood test you might want to get your iron and vitamin D levels etc tested as well as screening for rubella immunity and all the other stuff they like to test for, that will save you having to go in another time. They then combine the results from both tests to give you your risk factor for several genetic diseases. I'm ok with blood tests so long as I don't actually watch them do it, just look away as the needle goes in, really it is not painful at all.
