Rice ... He just refuses it totally. He used to love it. I have changed the cooking method and have tried everything ... And now I am fed up. He would just spit it out even if I distract and feed him.

He is not putting on enough weight. He is an active and energetic baby though and the doctor only asked me to change the method of cooking which I have done and still no improvement. It is this way since almost a month now. Can it be a phase? He eats everything else like fish, chips, soup, boiled veggies, meat, fruits etc (finger foods) But how do I substitute rice in his meal? Please tell me this is a phase! I thought my elder one was the fussiest child on the planet. I was so wrong. Please help :(

My 19 month DD is also going through a very fussy food phase. Its so frustrating. Maybe your DS is just bored with rice? I know my DD gets bored if I serve her the same types of food over and over. Just a thought. Anyway, hopefully these phases pass quickly. I finally took him to the doc yesterday just to check ... And apparently he is all fine (no ear infection, throat infection or the likes). He seems to be going through a phase. And yes it is frustrating to say the least! Just trying to keep his intake of quality food high.

Thank you plain Jane and kiwispiers! Life without rice is pretty difficult to imagine for us! I think I will just stop pushing him and let him eat what he likes as long as it is nutritious. Hopefully this is just a phase.

rice is a complex carbohydrate; millet, quinoa, pasta, bread, potato and starchy vegies are all substitutes and to be honest white rice is not all that nutritious anyway, certainly not essential to his diet. Kids go through growth spurts and have period where they don't grow. Pediatricians also don't always use the right charts, make sure your Dr is using the WHO charts not the old CDC charts.

In terms of weight gain - rice does not have a high calorie content and there are a lot of other foods which would be more effective to weight gain. For example meat, full cream dairy products etc. He might just be having a fad. I've got a fussy eater, and usually with him it seems the more I try to push him to eat a food, the more he will resist. Later he'll start eating things as suddenly as he stopped. He's five now and he's still doing it, lol. For weight gain - the important thing as that he is eating full nutritional meals regularly. If he has a full diet of meat, veg, dairy etc - his nutrition will not suffer. If you are worried about it - rices main nutritional content is carbohydrates and fibre. Other foods high in these nutirents are potato, cereals such as oatmeal and bran (weetabix, porridge, oats), wholemeal pasta, vegetables (especially beans), and bread. Those would be the type of food offering similar nutritional intake as rice. This such as the cereals mentioned above served with full cream milk with give him a similar nutrient intake as rice, but the milk will boost the calorie intake to contribute to weight gain. Alternatively you could also try mixing small amounts of rice in with his food so he does not actually pick up that this is what he is eating (I grate up vegetables to put in many of my DS's foods for this same reason).

We are Indians and it's a staple food for us. The doc insists on rice twice a day. I can't even get him to eat 2 spoons of rice. What do I substitute rice with? I am happy as long as he eats. Just stressed out a bit that he does not eat our normal food! He used to love it .... Not sure what happened now. He is refusing toast / bread too :(

Is there a specific reason to need to eat rice? Some children go in and out of fads with food. Often its easier to just go with the flow and try to get nutrients in to them with whatever they eat willingly at the time, rather than fuss with trying to find a way to make them eat something they don't want to.
