Hi all

I have heard that I need to was all my baby clothes, bedding, blankets etc before the little one is born as its all new and in packaging.

I have found non bio fairy powder but can I use normal softener???

Hi, i agree with the others always wash everything before use. If you want the clothes to be a bit softer i tumble mine on low. They come out very nice n soft. But also a bit wrinkly of course. But less wrinkles if i do on low then full tumble since they are not totally dry on the low setting on my washing machine. But not all baby clothes can be tumbled so do check the labels. . Ive made the mistake and tumbled a mothercare bib with plastic on the back.... Needless to say the plastic shrunk. Very silly i just did not think of it at the time. Also the really nice outfits i have are also a no go for tumbling. I started out using fair non bio worked fine. Now i am trying Purex. It also works fine no issues with DD skin. I swapped due to the price difference thought it was worth a try and i will continue with Purex since it is working.

Better to wash all.Did not wash linen for my bed which I bought recently and I was shocked...after one night in my new bedlinen I was bitten in 5-6 places on my legs...linen bought at a very special home store we all love...but do not want to give the name as I think it was perhaps just a once off...cannot imagine that this store would be full of bugs...but I feel this can happen and I should have been washing it before using. We all know how easy bugs can crawl in and do not want them on new babies!!

Congrats! I would advise you to wash anything you bay as chemicals are added to keep away rats and insects during transportation and warehouse storage. Sorry, but this is how it is :) As for the softener - there are baby ones. I personally love them :)

as happy 35 suggested better toavoid softeners. you don't know anything about the baby's skin so far. i washed all the clothes twice in non bio detergent only. i use "charm" from c4. quite cheap. ds's clothes are washed in normal detergent and all his pj's, nappies,inserts in non bio detergent.

I use Purex baby detergent liquid, and a tablespoon of Downy baby fabric softener (it's the white bottle with a baby on it) in the washing machine, and the clothes come out really soft. I haven't had any issue with a skin reaction, thankfully!

Many babies develop skin rashes or worse in the first couple of months due to their skin being very sensitive initially, so I would definitely avoid fabric softener, many times it even causes issues with adults. I use Ecover fragrance free-non bio powder for DD but am about to try Purity Sensitive liquid which I heard is very good as well-Purex was also recommended. Instead of softener you can pour some white wine vinegar in the softener compartment, apparently it helps remove soap residue from clothes, softens them and keeps the washing machine in good condition (scale, if an issue).

Hi, I use the Fairy non bio powder and its lovely on the clothes, I don't find that I would need softener at all, not that I would use it for a baby anyway, but thats a personal decision.

Congrats, it's an exciting time with newborn. Softener is not recommended cause of sensitive skin. I guess it depends on your baby's skin. I wash all new clothes before using them. edited by Happy35 on 27/10/2012 <em>edited by Happy35 on 27/10/2012</em>
