Hi ladies,

Though I still have a few months to due date, I was wondering how does the process of registering a baby here in Dubai works and how complicated is it to get him a passport and residency visa.

A neighbor told me the local authorities require that the baby carries the same nationality as the father (and not the mother). Is this true?

Is it true you have to provide your marriage certificate?

Any info would be appreciated :)

To register newborn http://www.dubai.ae/en/Lists/HowToGuide/DispForm.aspx?ID=33 To obtain residency visa http://www.dubai.ae/en/Lists/HowToGuide/DispForm.aspx?ID=12 I've also heard of Baby Steps Dubai. I had a look on their website and they charge 570 AED to register the birth of your newborn (according to the first link above it would cost you 395 AED - probably a bit more as the costs listed on the government site are as of 2011) so it doesn't cost that much more to have Baby Steps do it for you and save you the running around. BUT when it comes to obtaining a residency visa, the fee to do it yourself (again this is the 2011 fee rate per the government website) is apparently 315 AED for a two year visa but Baby Steps quote their fee as 1510 AED? That seems like a massive markup. I'm just wondering if I'm missing something ie are there additional costs to obtain a visa for your baby that are not listed on the government website? Has anyone obtained their child's residency visa themselves recently and can provide an idea of the 2013 fee to do this directly? Thanks

Our baby will not have the same nationality as her father, as he can not pass on his British nationality, but I can pass on my Dutch nationality and we want the baby to have an EU passport. I didn't think this was a problem. Why would it be??

Thank you so much ladies for all the info! A1984- I didn't even think of checking Dubai gov site, thanks :) I tried DNRD but the relevant links were not available... According to the info you posted it seems that any of the parents can be the sponsor, which is great. Anyway, now I'll pass the info to hubby and put him in charge of the process. I hate dealing with this stuff ;)

Hi Pichon....here is the info from the Government of Dubai website....i believe this should be the most accurate. Get a residency visa for a new born baby in Dubai Congratulations if you have just had a baby. You must follow certain criteria for registration of your new baby. Criteria You must apply for a residency visa for a new-born baby within 120 days of his/her birth. If you fail to do this the child will not be allowed to leave the UAE and the legal guardian must pay an AED100 fine for each day over the 120 day period. Documents Required: • Application form • Original passport for the baby (if the baby was added to one of his parent’s passport, take that one) • Original + a copy of the baby’s birth certificate (must be attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs - Dubai office. Tel: 04-2221144) • 3 passport sized photos of the baby • Original + a copy of the attested marriage certificate • Passport copy of sponsor. • Copy of job contract for the sponsor or a salary certificate Procedure: • Go to a certified typing office and have them complete the form for you after paying the fees. • Go to the residency section at the GDRFA (Toll free 800-5111), and hand in the documents. • The passport with the residency visa will be sent to you through a courier service. Fees: - AED 100 residence fees for each year. - AED 115 adding fees. Hi Pichon, hope I'm not mistaken, but first of all, you need an attested Birth Certificate. I used this company, they are really reliable and very quick. http://www.babystepsdubai.com/ I am sure there is another way, to go to different places and do it yourself, but as I remember, the price is only a slightly more. Then you need to go to your Embassy to apply for the passport, then request for the residential visa. I'm not sure whether it's the father or mother's nationality the baby will carry, but it seems logical that it's the father's. You must have your marriage certificate to give birth in this country.
