Hi Ladies,

My DD is 3y/o. She has extremely curly hair, which is very nice looking, everyone likes her hair - except me :p because it's so difficult to take care of! The thing is she hates washing it, as all kids I suppose, but as I've just had a baby, I cannot struggle everyday with bath time, so sometimes I let her go to bed without a shower, and the next morning, I would suffer putting hair clips or making a poney tail. I''ve let her let her let it grow to the shoulders because I've been raised with short hair and I didn't like it, so I want her to enjoy being a little girl, but I really need support other ways I'll head to the kids salon! I really would like opinions: are there some serum, cremes... anything that can help?

We had this drama too, every morning and when we wash hair.... I tried all the oils recommended and can open a small shop with all the products we've tried that have not worked for detangling my daughters waist length, curly hair. Then just recently, we were at a birthday party and daughter was running around with her hair unbrushed and looking like a birds nest (insert embarrassed smiley here!) because we'd only managed to brush her hair for about 5 minutes before she'd had enough. Another mum at the party offered her unsolicited advice for such a regular product I almost rolled my eyes......... but I went and bought it because I had not tried it and for 20dhs I thought what have I got to loose. Lo and behold it is our new miracle product. I told her I bought her a new grown up conditioner, just like mummie's and let her put it on herself. No tangles, 2 minutes to brush / comb through and she now loves taking care of of her gorgeous hair. Use the Pantene Oil Replensihment conditioner when you wash hair and then the Pantene Oil replenishment leave in overnight cream (comes in a pump bottle) before you comb wet or dry hair. We actually use the overnight cream everynight now and plait her hair before she goes to bed. Hi gemm3210, I've looked for the product in Geant, but they had an "oil replacement collection", are you sure of the name? I wish we could send pictures here, just to make sure it's the same product.

You do not need to wash a child's hair every day. Actually you don't need to wash adult hair every day either! I have washed my kids hair every 7 days (usually Saturday night as a ritual) for years without issue. As kids we only had our hair washed weekly. And no their hair does not look dirty or unclean. Washing hair will not prevent nits. Nits don't care whether the hair is clean or dirty at all. To prevent nits you need to ensure that hair is checked regularly and tied up in a neat style (buns, plaits etc) every day for school/nursery. A spray of coconut oil with a small dash of tea tree oil over the top will deter the little critters but NOTHING will prevent them 100%.

A few of my nieces and one sister have very curly hair. This is what they do. Wash only once a week. While it is wet and has conditioner in, comb it through to detangle and then rinse. After washing just gently dry with a towel and leave it alone. My sister who's hair is long wraps it in a towel to dry. They do not brush their hair during the week when it is dry as this makes it frizzy. I know they put it in a pony tail for school/work but never brush it - only use hands to put into the shape and then use the tie/elastic. There is no need to wash every day - this is overkill for a child and just creating work for yourself. rejoice in the curls! Washing once a week seems a much more comfortable solution for me. But hygienically speaking, isn't it less than needed for kids? She's going to school next year, and I'm already frightened from nits!

I can't wait to try this with her, but one question: is it ok to use a grown ups conditioner for her hair? she's 3, and a hairdresser once told me kids should use only kids product until they're 5 years old at least.

Ladies I loved all your answers! Thank you so much!! I'm feeling already much better for knowing I'm not the only one struggling with this, and knowing there are solutions.

My daughter also has curly hair and very knotty. Is the Tangle Teezer available in most Boots? Dinks- What about coconut oil, if argan oil is no good (though I thought it was pure argan oil), we use organic cold pressed virgin coconut oil from The organic store for skincare and I use it for hair masques. Argan oil is fine, although its probably too heavy on the hair for a three year old. Its the serums that are bad for hair not natural oil. Curly hair tends to get dry thats why leave in conditioners are best especially of you use Tea Tree conditioner spray.....it keeps the nits away too.

Hi Lulee, as far as I know, tangle tweezers can be bought from some salons such as Sisters, and I saw the kiddies version (a flower and a little pot to hold hair ties and clips) in Mothercare MOE once. Her hair is knotty in the mornings because her hair will still have some of the fine baby hair. You shouldn't use Morrocan oil or serums on childrens hair or adults, the silicone (that's in most serums) builds up and will break the hair. You also shouldn't brush the hair when its dry as it will snap the hair.. The best thing to do is buy a leave in conditioner spray, squirt the hair a few times so its slightly damp and use a tangle teaser or better still a wide tooth comb, then leave to dry. The more you mess around with curly hair the fuzzier it gets.

I second the tangle teezer for knotty hair, my daughter has straight but fine hair however my niece has curly hair and is a nightmare unless we use the tangle teezer. The regular kids detailing sprays are so mild and light I doubt they help with really tangled hair, try argon oil/ Moroccan oil, it works for my niece. My good friend has very tight curls and I remember when we were in school she always smelt like conditioner, and her hair always looked amazing. I asked her what she did to it and she said she just leaves her regular conditioner in her hair otherwise the curls were not manageable. My youngest has fine curly hair and the tangle teaser seems to be the best thing for us. We still have to deal with knots but it does work through the mass of hair successfully without too much stress!

You can buy a leave in conditioner spray. I used to use it on my DDs fuzzy morning hair and it was great as it didnt hurt when I brushed it. Always brush/comb from the bottom if you brush from the top all the knots just bunch in the middle of the hair.

Wow that is really tough...poor little girl, no wonder she hates you touching her hair! Have you tried the Tangle Teezer brush? I haven't tried it myself but the amount of people that I have heard absolutely rave about how amazing it is I'm wanting to get my hands on one. Apparently Boots sell it here, and it's supposed to be a miracle brush. I'm not really sure what makes it special to be honest, but I trust the people that have told me about it. http://www.boots.com/en/Tangle-Teezer-Pink_1000439/ Read the customer reviews! edited by SEY83 on 09/01/2014

I have curly hair and so do my kids, although none of us have extremely curly hair. Honestly the best thing I find is brushing our hair whilst in the shower with conditioner on. You can buy conditioner for children which is mild, I know some will object to conditioner on children, but I have seen my children cry their eyes out when I try to undo knots from their hair without it. You will find brushing her hair whilst she has conditioner on is so much easier and the brush will just glide through. Hope this helps! Thank you for your reply. That's exactly what I'm doing: I brush her hair while in shower with conditioner, that's why shower time takes no less than 30 - 40 mn, I've bought the "original sprout" conditioner, thinking an organic brand would be softer for her hair. I've bought also a "body shop" natural bamboo brush, another "knot genie" one from internet... The problem is her hair is so thin that it gets heavy knots not just at the ends but even close to the roots. I sometimes wish I've had some super power to brush them easily!

Okay so this is going to sound a little strange but I was just visiting a friend of mine in Australia who had a similar problem with her three year old who wouldn't allow her hair to be washed. Might be a little unorthodox but she found some videos on youtube of children who had nits and showed these to her daughter. Apparently ever since, the child has been obsessed with having her hair washed and put into pony tails!! She seems to now be a little terrified of the thought of catching 'nips' from others and wants to be as clean as possible! Not making any recommendations here, just passing on something that I heard! Looking for a "like" button Hahahahahaaa same!! Lol this was a wonderful idea I could've never thought about :)) Your friend must be really clever or really desperate :)) Many thanks
