Hi ladies,

I was wondering if anyone has any experience of buying tires in Dubai recently. I think I might have paid well over the odds but I don't think I had a great deal of options at the time. One of my tires blew near trade centre earlier today - a very helpful guy towed my car to Al Quoz to a 24/7 tire place. It was on my way home and he knew that it would have stock of what I needed and, as it was Friday, he knew they would be open.

OK so I appreciate that I'm probably not in a position to negotiate a great deal - expat female being towed to a tire place (Lord Land - the first place you come to coming off Al Khail Road to Um Suqueim Road).............my existing tires were 2011 and I was expecting to have to change them this year. The options for changing all 4 were:

- Michelin - AED 4,500
- Dunlop - AED 3,500
- Mayrun - AED 2,800

There were some cheaper Chinese options which I didn't even consider but this was a lot more than I was expecting to pay. Eventually I went for the Mayrun option - a US based company with the tires being made in Germany. I negotiated hard - in fact the kind gentleman from the breakdown company did his best also. Eventually got them down to AED 2,200. The guys fitted the new tires and then I got hit with an 'alignment issue'.........I was told alignment was included in the cost but one of the guys showed me an issue with my tires not being properly aligned (centred). So they asked for AED 700 to help me sort the problem out........I did push back but after a long debate, I was losing the will to live (this whole process since I discovered my initial tire issue had taken around 3 hours) and I agreed to pay AED 300 - I'm sure I was being ripped off! But to cut a very long story short, i paid AED 2500 all in.

Anyone else out there recently changed their tires?

I prefer Michelin tyres for my vehicles as the quality they offer in this price range is unbeaten. They are long lasting, durable and also fuel efficient. Using them since 5 years and do not want to switch to another brand.

VictoriaM, Sorry to hear about your experience! I'm not sure whether it makes me feel any better that you got shafted as well :-) The rescue guy I had actually helped me out a lot. I had an emergency spare in my boot so all he was really obliged to do was to help me change the wheel which would allow me to get to the nearest garage to get a replacement. He did this but, as it was a Friday, i) he wasn't sure what was open and ii) I also ran the risk of them not having stock. In hindsight, I think somewhere on beach road may have cost even more. Anyway, he mentioned this umm suqueim place he was aware of would definitely have what I needed - there is a big yellow sticker on my emergency wheel which said "maximum 80kmph" and the thought of me having to drive c. 30km at that speed wasn't the most appealing. So he actually put my car on the tow-truck and gave me a lift there before helping to negotiate. I actually joked with him that he should be getting commission from the the garage - he laughed and said 'if they pay me, you will pay more' and then went onto say that he had been offered kick-backs from other garages in the past. I smelled a rat when the manager (the guy who was doing the least work and mainly in the office) wouldn't allow me to pay before the whole job was complete. At the time, I thought that he wanted to make sure I was entirely happy with the job but it became obvious when they identified 'a alignment issue' which required more money, that this was always their plan. Under the circumstances whilst I knew I was getting screwed, I really just wanted to job done properly so coughed up the extra. But I think they all knew that I knew what they were doing. I paid - the invoice mentioned nothing about his 'extra issue' and I just left. They had me over a barrel........at least back home, you have transparency on all the costs (on computer). Ladies be warned - avoid Lord Land if at all possible!!

This should make you feel better annorman. I had the Exact same experience in the exact same garage and got ripped off way more than that! Well done for negotiating hard. I felt too uncomfortable and didn't even try, just wanted to get out of there and sure I paid twice what you did. DH not happy at all, especially as we had no idea we even needed new tyres, so it wasn't on the agenda or in the budget. Sounds like you may have got a good deal. Well done! The rescue guy told me that garage had the best prices. Whether or not they do, they are certainly taking advantage of expat women falling into their hands to do some very hard selling! A warning to all you other ladies.

AED 625 per tyre including alignment seems very reasonable. I paid just over that last year for changing mine (Kia Sportage).

Hi, Not sure what car you drive but got my 4 wheel drive tyres recently changed. The tyres ranged between Dhs890 - Dhs1,150 per tyre for various makes. I opted for Bridgestones which totalled Dhs3,740 which was the middle of the range price of Dhs 935 each. Hope that helps. edited by Solo on 06/02/2015
