Book restoration

I have several very old cook books hand written by my mother and grandmother and I'd very much like to have them copied and restored to give to my children for Christmas. I have tried endless companies all of whom tell me, often very rudely, to get a soft copy and they will bind it. This would mean destroying the books that are not already falling to pieces to scan them There seems to be little to no understanding of restoration. The cultural centres which do restore books only deal with Arabic texts.

Does any one know if this can be done in the UAE?

Many thanks. :)

There are no professional book binders in the UAE that do these jobs. I've looked for book binders for a few months to have my daughter's artworks bound and a few other things and they either only do commercial quantities/ jobs or they are DESCO-style cheap copy shop places that lack the fundamental understanding of what book binding means. I ended up taking everything with me to Europe over Christmas break and having it done there by an old-school bookbinder, which turned out absolutely beautiful and a lot cheaper than any job that I was offered here. If these are heirloom pieces you're talking about, don't risk them by giving them to unqualified labor here!

Yes I am coming to that conclusion! It is a shame. Thanks for your response. :)

Hi Dinkie Die, I think as you want to have the books copied, then they will need to be scanned and will probably ruin the original. Otherwise you may have to look overseas for book restoration, which is very expensive, but you will not be able to copy the book.
