Saudi Trip and Wedding - Many questions

I am rife with questions with AM and was hoping to get some answers to another one.

We will be traveling to Saudi to visit DHs family and attend the wedding of a family member. We will be in Jeddah and then Riyadh.

Question is this: What sort of abaya do I need to buy and how serious of an infraction is it to adjust your shayla in public there? Also, will I be able to easily and without problems visit sites on my own?

Believe it or not I am receiving conflicting facts from DHs family about how 'bad' it is to have a shayla drop, have hair showing, raoming around on my own etc.

Thanks!

Cute. Very cute. But jewels have their, ahem, 'place'. On occasion. ;)

Snort! He wants you to 'fit in' and have fun to boot, doesn't he? He'll survive. :D He just said: 'Babe, if I wanted to marry a jewel encrusted gulf woman I would have. I married you for your khakis and your sweater sets"

Ohh and if you're after gorgeous shoes to fit the 'look', you can't go further than Rene Caovilla [there's a shop in MoE'>. Really fabulous bling-y shoes there which make an amazing statement. I bought a pair of 'encrusted' flip flops there a couple of months back and they always strike me as being Saudi-wedding appropriate. ;) But for the most part, you'll find that heels dominate at these things [well, from memory!'>, so if you're comfortable tottering around in skyscraper heels, knock yourself out. You'll be in good company. :D I love it! All fabulous suggestions! Dh is sitting here in ajbect horror and I will be off to MOE start of the week!

Yes I agree LBD will not do, you need over the top. Head down to Bustan Centre for a broswe and they have beautiful hair accessories and jewelry.

LOL! I was laughing when I read about the "sorts of things the women wore to [your'> wedding would have had your hair stand on end. It was like a stripper convention". I went to a wedding once where -- I swear -- it was wall-to-wall cleavages straight out of Donatella Versace-ville! :D Needed sunglasses to focus on women's faces because their sparkle was just so ... out of this world! I guess when it's a golden opportunity to really spread one's wings, the girls will make the most of it. ;) Not entirely sure an LBD will pass muster, missy; best get yourself outfitted properly before the Big Day. :D

I think you should go all out with the abaya. I'm sure the Saudi women wear the most glamorous abayas and dresses when they attend weddings. Since it's a family member go all out. There are some gorgeous abayas with swarvoski crystals in Abu Hail Centre. Ask for bridal abayas and that will point you in the right direction. Do you have a dress? I think there may be decency laws that prohibit me from going all Bling-tastic on the abaya front, but I can probbaly find that out. I do have an abaya for special occasions like weddings, see through, detailed with emboridery etc. Dress wise I have something which the women will probably find demure. The sorts of things the women wore to my wedding woul have had your hair stand on end. It was like a stripper convention. Oops was thinking of what abaya you should wear for weddings. For everyday wear, yes I would go with something plain with no bling. There are so many beautiful black abayas now with no embroidery or bling. I'm a souk fan, I get mine in the new building in souk naif. I'm pretty sure I saw belly dancing outfits on the 2nd floor of the building (re: to your other thread)

Don't forget: the abaya -- for the wedding -- won't be worn the whole time. You will have a lovely opportunity to shed it and show off your finery underneath [as it will be women only for almost the entire celebrations'> so make sure you go equally 'all out' on your 'under'-outfit; shoes, make-up, the works! :D You're probably aware Jeddah is much less restrictive than Riyadh but your wedding abaya should be a different class again from the sort you would wear 'down the street'. Plain is better in Riyadh ... you can get away with more bling in Jeddah. ;) What fun. I'm sure you'll have an absolute ball. :) Ah ha, you see, that distinction betweem cities is exactly what I was looking for! Thanks WaxMuch. My under outfit is pretty tame I am afraid, little black dress the same as I would probably wear anywhere. Maybe I should step it up and go a little out of comfort zone for the underneath dress. I am going to do the full on makeup that you choose from a book. Love that part :-)

I believe that as a woman, you shouldn't be going anywhere on your own and are supposed to be accompanied by a male who is either your husband or a relative - unless things have changed in recent times.
