Read this blog, http://bujassem.blogspot.com/2010/04/expensive-petrol-is-cheaper-for-you.html read Ultra[blues'>'s commentary at the bottom of the blog, he knows what he is talking about... the fact the blogger said he went 'further' on higher octane fuel is with likely he didnt drive as hard as he normally would because he was conducting an "experiment" or that his car was actually designed to use 97 anyway. efficient combustion means no knocking (incorrect timed combustion) = fuel efficiency. <em>edited by Blueskies on 02/02/2011</em>

Its appears it is Illegal in a lot of countries around the world some as far back as 1989....but many from 99 onwards. i couldnt find anything about the middle east though... i would like to think its unlikely you will find it here...but then i dont think the environment is top priority here for many...

Special is 95 RON and Super is 97 RON and it doesnt have anything to do with cleanliness. This is the Octane level of the fuel. Put simply the Octane level adjusts how easily the fuel is to combust. the higher the octane level the less likely it is to combust when the piston cycle is not at its optimum position ie top dead centre (when the fuel is compressed with air at the moment the spark plug ignites it). if it occurs outside this position you get knocking. the piston can be forced higher than it should risking the crown, valves or other engine components if left unchecked. modern engines monitor and alter the timing to suit. that said, to get efficient combustion more powerful engines are designed for the higher compression required..the likes of your Beemers and RRovers timed to perfection so combustion happens efficiently at the moment it is supposed to. Generally its accepted as a myth that you get more power from using higher octane in an engine designed for 95 RON. Leaded petrol used to have a lead based compound that elevated the octane level and controlled knocking, but lead residues that stuck to engine parts stopping wear would get passed through the system and into the atmosphere so bad for peoples health. Engines are pretty simple, its just now they have computers controlling them/ monitoring them and adjusting them which makes them seem complicated.... <em>edited by Blueskies on 02/02/2011</em>

I thought it was based on the purity of the gasoline... 93% vs 97% pure. Usually high end vehicles specify to use the more pure gasoline to maintain the engine.

Super is more cleaner than Special, cars like BMW, Range Rover one uses Super. Super is more costlier than Special. Super is not with lead.... It is more clean petrol
