Hi ladies, good morning! I'm due to have my son in April and I'm just curious if there are any other americans out there who had to go through the process of getting their baby an american passport after delivering here? However my DH has a Lebanese passport so I believe the process is different than if we were both americans. To make things more tricky, I will be going on my husbands visa next month and our son will also be on his visa once he's born, not sure if this will have any effect on getting the passport issued... I checked the consulats website and it has some info, but not 100% clear so just though I'd ask here first before I call them. Any advice would be great :)
thanks
Gina

We received our little ones passport within a week, unfortunately they printed the wrong birth date! They issued us an emergency passport because we were traveling back to the states, and it was their mess up. It took them over 4 weeks to get us the original passport once we re-submitted the emergency passport. Which prolonged getting the residence visa! We went back to the states before getting the visa, which caused issues. I called immigration, they told me there wasn't anything you need to do for the baby to leave, which was untrue. We applied for the SS# back in the states. Good luck, its all a big pain, but the baby is worth it! oh geeze all I've done since I moved to Dubai is get things stamped/issued/notarized/yada yada yada...well thank you so much ladies, I'm glad I asked now and not later!! Once you submit everything that is required, how long does it take them to issue a proper passport? Do you need the get the social security card first?

thanks again...I wouldn't be so concerned about all this but my dad is not doing well and I'm just worried that the time will come that I will need to travel home with no notice and all the baby's paperwork won't be ready...and there is no way I would leave without him...life ain't easy

As U.S. citizen parent(s), you should report your child's birth abroad as soon as possible to the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate to establish an official record of the child's claim to U.S. citizenship at birth. The official record will be the Consular Report of Birth of a Citizen of the United States of America , Form FS-240. This document, know as the Consular Report of Birth Abroad , is a basic United States citizenship document. An original FS-240 document will be given to you at the time registration is approved. A Consular Report of Birth can only be prepared at a U.S. embassy or consulate. It cannot be prepared if the child has been brought back into the United States, or, if the person is 18 years of age or older at the time the application is made. Section 6039E of the Internal Revenue Code (26 U.S.C. 6039E) requires you to provide your Social Security Number (SSN), if you have one, when you apply for a U.S. passport or renewal of a U.S. passport. If you have not been issued a SSN, enter zeros in box #5 of the passport application form you are completing. Contact the Social Security Administration to request a Number. If you are residing abroad, you must also provide the name of the foreign country in which you are residing. The U.S. Department of State must provide your SSN and foreign residence information to the Department of Treasury. If you fail to provide the information, you are subject to a $500 penalty enforced by the IRS.

It doesn't matter if your spouse is not American. You are.But both mother and father have to be present when u submit the paperwork. You have to prove you lived in the States(easiest is to show your school transcripts). If you ever been divorced you have to supply your divorce decree or decrees. If u never lived in the States, procedure is completely different. U will need baby's birth certificate.Translated from Arabic. With all the stamps from all the relevant ministries. There is a service at Al Baraha hospital(this is where the Arabic birth certificates are issued) which for a fee will do the legwork.Get all the stamps, and have all the English translations done(and as many copies u are willing to pay for, probably better to get couple of them anyways) Send you husband to the the initial visit(get Arabic BC, he will need hospital report of the birth, hospital will give u that when u leave the place) and make arrangements.I went and had quite traumatic experience...We didn't know I had to have permission from my husband to ask for BC. And after u get consular report of the birth abroad( that is birth certificate) it is a good thing to fill a form for social security card. Good luck

You have to have your school transcripts proving that you were living in the USA for more than 7 years I believe. I've just requested my KG - 12th grade transcripts from my school (they requested primary/high school) with an official stamp, along with baby's birth certificate (translated) and marriage certificate (translated) and both mother and father should be present at time of application. Goodluck!!
