hi guys, there is so much on internet and i dont know where to start, I want to be near the subway and within walking distance to lots. travelling with 2 teens so kid friendly. I dont know where to begin.. also what would you put on your top 5 places to see , keeping in mind i have a 10 year old boy who hates shopping and a 14 year old girl who loves it.!!

Firstly I am insaneley jealous! I can definitely recommend a Hotel that was recommended to me in 2007 and I wouldnt consider staying anywhere else its on Park Avenue so very well situated, have a look http://www.hotelgiraffe.com/ the bagels you get for breakfast regularly crop up in my dreams! Also top tip for entertaining the kids is the Helicopter ride you get down at south street sea port, works out at £35 per person and as your a family you will probably get it to yourselves. Enjoy! I stayed in one of the sister hotels to this last Autumn - cannot recommend it enough! Breakfast was AMAZING, and they did cheese and wine each evening which was a really nice way to unwind after a long day's sightseeing! It's a stones throw from 5th Ave and Madison, 10 min walk to Central Park, 5 min to Lexington subway. If I ever go back to NYC I would definitely stay here. http://www.elyseehotel.com/

have you looked at VRBO.com.....because rents are so high, many NY'ers rent there places out while they are away. It really depends on your budget - in tribeca, there is a hotel called the cosmopolitan, it is definately budget, but clean and tidy, nothing luxurious though! I love tribeca (lived there for 3 1/2 glorious years)...there are also some swankier hotels that opened, but can't remember their names, I'll ask DH. Anyway thing about tribeca, really good access to subway lines (fastest way around the city), great restaurants, and it also gives you a feel for what it is like living in NYC as it is a residential neighbourhood (great for celeb spotting!) also a 1/2 hour walk to soho, little longer to the village and meatpacking district - but great walks!

A great starting point.

We're having some girl's time in NYC this summer, what a timely thread! What is a reasonable amount of time to spend there to see the top 10..? Is a week too long/too short? Love your list, Simple! I haven't been to NYC since the 90s and my friend hasn't ever been.

We stayed at the Sheraton Hotel and Towers. Loved it and its super close to Times Square as well as the theatre district. I'm so envious! NYC is my all time fav city!

We stayed in the residence inn times square by Marriott. Have been to NY lots and has by far the biggest rooms. Slow lifts during rush our but great location and very reasonable and clean. Room had a seperate kitchen dining area and breakfast included for less than 500aed/night. Must do. Woodbury common outlet shopping take coach from port authority, 1hour but so worth it! Buy the card that you get so many attractions for a discounted price. Helicopter over the statue of liberty, FAO Scwartz for the kids, register now and perhaps be in the audience for a tv series being filmed. Lucky you!

Oh, and we swear by the Rough Guide to NY. Though we bought it when we were on a budget, we found that it gave lots of ideas of things off the beaten track and that not too many people, except New Yorkers, necessarily know about.

It's so long since I stayed in NY that I can't in all honesty recommend an hotel - my favourite used to be the Algonquin, but it was quite old-fashioned, maybe not for teens. I'm sure there will be someone here shortly with more up-to-date info. The great thing about Manhattan is that you can walk everywhere and whilst you're walking, there's such a lot to see. OK, my top five things to do, off the top of my head, in no particular order: 1. Metropolitan Museum of Art 2. See the view from the top of the Empire State Building 3. Staten Island Ferry Ride 4. Tour of Grand Central Station, ending up with fish in the Oyster Bar 5. The Frick Museum 5. Stroll through Central Park (visit Strawberry Fields) 5. See a show by the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall, or just do a tour of RCMH 5. See a show on Broadway (never done that, wish I had!) 5. Walk down Fifth Avenue looking at the shops. 5. Go to Bloomingdales, FAO Schwarz, Macy's 5. Statue of Liberty 5. Washington Square 5. Walk round Greenwich Village and SoHo (where the streets have names) 5.
