Need some advice on living in Manchester. What are nice & safe areas to live in Manchester with easy access to Manchester University?

And where could I search for short term rentals in Man till we find a house/flat (besides hotels)?
TIA.

Thanks so much for all replies! Really helpful info. Freckle and Shilpa, DH will most probably be located on main campus near Oxford Rd. and I might stay at home for the time being :) We are planning to search for a quieter area, but with good public transport connections to the campus and to city centre. No ideas reg. budget yet, just starting to collect info :) Thanks again.

Salford is the scariest place I have ever been to in my life! I thought I'd got it on a bad day!

Hi Kermi...I'm just about to leave Manchester with my husband to live in Dubai! You probably need to give a little more info about your personal situation to get good advice on areas that would suit you ie age range, budget, family situation etc. I currently live in West Didsbury which is on the main commuter route to Manchester Uni. It is mainly a young professional/family area with some nice restaurants and cafés. Can be quite expensive though. Average price for a 3 bed townhouse is £1200 pm. When I was a mature student I lived in Chorlton which has more of a "bohemian" feel. Less expensive than Didsbury. There are a really nice selection of bars and restaurants and it is a popular area for going out. Transport links to Manchester Uni are good. Fallowfield/Withington are dominated by student rentals ( these are the next areas along from Didsbury into town). Lots of student bars/restaurants with deals etc. Not brilliant if you have a family. On main commuter route. Best website that would give you an idea of availability/prices www.rightmove.co.uk Good luck with the move!

Aww I lived in Manchester for 6 years (went to uni of manc for 4/6 yrs) and this post made me smile so I shall try and be as helpful as I can! There are so many choices near the campus. Are u going to be at the main campus or UMIST? Which buildings will u based in? what is ur budget? There are several places on oxford road to rent, then deansgate and castlefield (fairly pricey) and there’s places in town near the arndale centre and further out onto the norther quarter. The other end of oxford road, u have rusholme (curry mile), Victoria park, further down u have longsight (wouldn’t recommend that). I lived in Victoria Park area for 4 out of my 6 years :) any advice u need, let me know.

my hometown too. im from altrincham. Hale is a lovely area, but expensive. i live in sale and have a lovely victorian house there. stay away from moss side and cheetham hill, salford those areas! Didsbury is also lovely, and chorlton, but can be expensive, i love to eat and drink round there. withington also isnt a bad area. some huge victorian houses there. edited by Mulberry on 24/01/2011

ooooh my hometown! as kacey says - didsbury is nice but quite pricey. the crime rate isn't as good as you might think though. heaton moor is gorgeous - technicaly stockport but only about 8 miles from manchester and you can jump the train into the centre (takes 10 mins max) renting in the city is also a good idea - i have two apartments there and you can probably get a two bedder for about 750 a month, nice area, parks etc. everything is really accessible on foot.

Every town in Manchester has its good and bad areas like most places but I would generally stay away from the towns directly circling the city centre (Moss Side, Longsight etc) and go for ones just outside those. For access to the university I would suggest Didsbury as the nicest closest town. If you have the money, renting directly in the city centre is nice and lively - maybe not the best if you have a family though? Do you have any specific requirements, I was born and bred so will try my best to advise! :) That would be great! Can I email you? edited by Kermi on 25/01/2011
