Although my husband is circumcised and I personally like it, we agreed not to have our son done based on medical advice back home and I have been happy with that decision. He has been taught about personal hygiene and everything was fine, however he is now 12 / 13 yrs old and 2 doctors (1 in the UK where it not routinely practiced) have said it is essential he now has it done for medical reasons. Given he is an older child and just entering puberty, does anyone have any advice as how best to get this done and where in Dubai ? I have read a lot about plastic rings which seem the simplest procedure to more major surgery which worries me. Any advice or recommendations on this and how to care for him would be appreciated as I am really nervous about it.

I believe that they will do it under local which is better than general, and have heard glowing reports on this at the American Hospital. my oldest had to have it done as a baby because of medical issues but wasnt bothered afterwards as it was done under a general when they were doing surgery so i suppose everyones experience is different. Mine was done at 5 months without any anesthesia along with another minor surgery.....he went through ****. Ouch !! Will certainly want to avoid that for him.

I read about Plastibells or plastic rings that can be applied so that the skin just falls away after a few days. My boys both had the bell technique and the recovery was absolutely nothing! A few hours after the procedure they were up playing and feeling fine. We had to fight them to keep them quiet and inactive. But I thought the doctor said the bell technique is for the younger children that are smaller in size so I don't know if a 14 year old would qualify, but if the doctor can use the bell technique, insist on it. My first son didn't even have any bleeding afterwards, it was such a simple procedure. Yes I totally agree, it seems such a simple and less traumatic procedure and I will certainly ask, however as you say he may just be a little to old. Many thanks x

Plastibells are for babies and toddlers only as their skin is still very soft and thin so its easier for them. At 13/14 years old the doctor needs to cut the skin under anaesthesia. Most kids recover quickly and as mentioned before, parents are more freaked out than the kids. Its a quick 30 minute procedure and usually 4-6hours after the procedure they are running around like nothing happened! They give pain medication which handles any uncomfortableness and antibiotic cream for prevention purposes. I recommend Dr. Wasfi Jouani. He is a consultant pediatric surgeon. He is the president of the Emirates Pediatric Surgeon society. http://www.doctor-dubai.com/dr_info_display.asp?dr_id=1148 Thank you, I will follow up your recommendations. I fear you are right about the Plastibel as I now know they tend to be in smaller sizes, but I shall ask the doctor just in case as my son is not that big down below.

Make sure they give appropriate painkillers or it feels like being " stung by a million bees" in the ****!

My nephew was circumcised at 14 due to medical issues. His mother assures me it was far more traumatic for her than it was for him. You're little man will be just fine. xx I am sure you are right and as my husband, brother and father are all circumcised I dont have a problem with it, albeit a little sad our original plan not to have the procedure done when he was little has now had to change, but for good reason. Thanks again for the reassurance, I am sure he will be fine too. x

Thank you to all that have replied. I really want to avoid him having a general anaesthetic if possible and so the idea of a local seems better. Are there different methods here ? There is no religious need for us and I would like to think I can help find the easiest and least painful option. Ella, My 14 year old was circumcised last summer at age 13 in the Iranian hospital. The procedure was over very quickly, the doctor fab and my son recovered very quickly, apart from initial soreness it didn't bother him at all. I can tell you more by emaill if you wish :) Thank you. It seems so much easier when they are very young. My email is: [email protected] Thankfully we are very open with my son and his twin sister and he does not seem to be overly emabarrassed, but being the age he is I perhaps worry more than him. Any advice would be very welcome. :)
