if you need a driving licence or to register a new car then yes you do need it, if you are re-registrating a car then at the moment you dont. but i would do it sooner rather than later, as in abu dhabi they are bringing it in, they are not waiting until 2013, they are from june combining visas with id cards, so you will have to get one from that date onwards so why not do it now depending on when your visa is about to expire.
Maybe Dubai will stick with the 2013 ruling. Hopefully?
who knows, but yes am thinking that abu dhabi being the capital will go ahead with this, but of course there are a lot of cars registered in abu dhabi but people live in dubai so you will have to get one if you have an ad plated car.

just renewed my car registration in Abu Dhabi 3 weeks ago and wasn't asked for the ID card.
yes not for renewals at the moment, but it will be coming soon enough.

Maybe we should just go and get it done. Another unnecessary expense for something useless. MIL says it only took her 5 minutes in Fujairah. Guess we will go down there to have it done as I cant stand queues.
When we were buying our cars last year, we hurried to get the process over because the salesman said that officially, an Emirates ID card was going to be necessary for registration after 1st January. He seemed to think it was more likely to be strictly enforced in Abu Dhabi than Dubai, I got the impression. Why don't you ring a garage and ask?
in abu dhabi yes you do for a new car if for a re-registration then no.
DH renewed his cars last week and used his ID. Not sure if he was required to, but I sensed he did.
Not sure if they will stick with 2013, some depts now require it from expats. maybe obscure.
Thanks ladies. So,I guess from the majority that it is not needed. Just hope they dont ask on the day we want to go register the car. Nothing seems to be black and white here. Lol!

I got my insurance company to renew mine, wasn't asked for it. Expats aren't required to have the ID till 2013 now, so 'shouldn't' matter if you don't have it.
we renewed in Nov 2010 and we haven't been asked for the ID card but a friend of mine did it in Jan 2011 and she needed one...so perharps this is a new requirement for 2011
