How difficult is it to find a well paying job in the USA in the field of Telecommunications in the west coast states? Any where can a person start from in terms of looking for a job over there?

Thank you ladies for your feedback, its a big challenge as I can see. MrsPacioli - Yeh, I have also thought that internal transfer would be the best option. gleekfamily - yeh, well, I have some constraints so wanted to see what my chances are.

How difficult? VERY. The scenario MrsPacioli describes is likely to play out similarly for you (even if you were a local hire). The only real exceptions are if you are highly recruited as a specialist (ie a senior management position at an existing telco) OR transferring within companies. No offense, but you are also being quite specific. A "well paying job" in "telecommunications" on the "west coast." People are scratching around for any paying jobs, in all sectors, anywhere! It sucks to be unemployed in the US right now...:(

safaa - I'm afraid the US is really falling on tough times and jobs are hard to come by. My husband and I have a good friend who finally works full time in Los Angeles with a news network after working there part time for several years. That field is hard to permeate even if the economy is good. Bigger cities have the most vacancies but smaller cities are more willing to hire because they will pay less. I agree that starting here and requesting a transfer will be your best option. You won't find relocation packages to the US like they have for Dubai. Good luck to you! You may try searching on craigslist to see what jobs are listed there or the local newspaper website, also. Not sure of the exact type of job you are searching for, but the major news networks are CNN (based in Atlanta, which is under turner.com), Fox News (based in New York), then the local affiliates for ABC, NBC, and CBS.

Hi Safaa, My best friend (also in telco) who is from Holland and has no green card went through this and found the folowing to be the overall experience: - Some companies did not respond due to her presence being outside of the USA - Sme companies would not schedule interviews unless she was willing to go there and do face to face interviews (at her own cost). In other words, they would not pay to fly her over. - Some companies stated clearly they would not sponsor her as the process was long and tedious (I don't know the process myself - She found that applying online yielded zero results. She would get automated messages and no follow ups. She believes this might have been due to high level of response from internal (US based) candidates. Not sure, just guessing. - She used her network of contacts in the US to have her CV submitted to decisionmakers, but she never got beyong the initial informal telephonic interview. Eventually she got a job in the US by working for a company in Dubai and askign for a transfer to the US after 2 yrs. She is now there, but on a special visa. I'm not sure it;s a greencard. I think it's an H-1 visa or something similar. Basically, she has no permanent legal residency yet. Maybe this strategy might work for you? I think AT&T etc have offices here, or try companies like Cisco, Nokia, Siemens, etc. or ask your current co for a transfer? Mrs. Pacioli

monster.com is a good start since you can look in specific fields and locations. Honestly, to get a job right now, its probably more about your network and who you know and who knows who that can recommendyou. This is what we are finding for my husband. I'm US citizen he's recently gotten his greencard and we have to move in 2-3 months to the States. The job market is VERY competitive and depending on your status (citizen, immigrant, etc) can be even harder. good luck!
