Good morning Ladies,
I have a friend arriving tonight for 1 night only. She has never been to Dubai so as well as taking her to a nice restaurant, a "taste" of the Dubai culture would also be nice. Any suggestions much appreciated. I am thinking either a nice restaurant at the fountains or the Madinat....

We had another visit to Bateaux Dubai a couple of weeks ago, when my parents were visiting, and the food was absolutely gorgeous! If it had suffered a decline, they've certainly lifted their game again. Would thoroughly recommend it. :)

The dinner cruise on bateaux Dubai is fabulous. The food is superb ( I'm sure their vegetarian option would be good) and you get to see Dubai from the creek. I loved it - very different and a great way to enjoy the sights. when did you last go? Feb and a friend of mine did it with her oarents last month and had a lovely evenjng. my husbands company also did it recently as a client evening - why - have you not had a good experience. One of my friends parents go each and every time they come over - it's one of their favourite things to do and the food has always been awesome. edited by Clairehdp on 03/07/2013 Oh yes, I go regularly, ever since they first started, but have seen a decline in food quality, very obviously. That is why I was wondering when you last went. In the beginning it was amazing and awesome, now it is ok, that is all. interesting - thanks for the feedback - might not be on my list then for my next trip!

My veggie Arab husband really likes the food at Zaroob Restaurant on Sheikh Zayed Rd. In addition to the fabulous starters, they have two great veggie main dishes: Egyptian koshary (black lentils, short rice, spaghetti, topped with insanely spicy tomato sauce and fried onions) and stuffed felafels (felafels stuffed with tomato-red chili paste). The venue has lots of distinctly Arab character and has a fun, youthful vibe. Another place to go (with easier parking but less frenetic energy) is Leila restaurant in Mirdif City Centre. Their vegetarian selection is fabulous and they also make the stuffed felafels.

Why not take her to the Emirati Restaurant in Festival City? The food hotels serve can be eaten anywhere, only the ambiance and height of buildings might be different lol. If she wants a taste of cultural take her to a local place. yes, this was my initial thought and what I usually do, but apparently she is largely vegetarian although not entirely, and Arabic cuisine is often quite meaty (apart from all of the delicious starters)

have you heard of Tiptahra? does that also have views of the fountain? DH loves thai food and we have also heard good things about that.. I've been told that Thiptara (from friends) is the best Thai in town, so definitely worth looking into. I didn't mention it or Asado as you mentioned a taste of Dubai - thought you meant the food! ;)

thanks Ladies, okay sounds good. I haven't been to Baker and Spice but it could work well. Mcsk, have you heard of Tiptahra? does that also have views of the fountain? DH loves thai food and we have also heard good things about that. I am also keen on the Armani Japanese restaurant, mmmmmm Otherwise I was thinking Barsta Art Cafe and a walk around the old town.

There are a few options available at the fountains, depending on your budget. The Armani Hotel has a really nice Japanese restaurant with views to the Fountain. Equally their main restaurant is insane, but on the expensive side. Cheaper version would be Baker and Spice with no alcohol, but lovely fresh produce. The Address Hotel downtown has a bar called Calabar where you can sit outside, have bar type food but very good quality and suffice for dinner too, nice drinks menu and Fountains right in front of you. I do love Asado at the Palace hotel, Old Town, Argentinian food with lovely wine selection, really nice ambiance if you feel like a conversation... Madinat is quite touristy also not the best food but you can get a nice view from the steak place...again, outside seating. Same with the Arabic restaurant at the courtyard where you can get shisha as well as standard Arabic food with amazing views of Burj Al Arab, might be very busy though. edited by mcsk on 23/06/2013

Bakes & Spice is a good shout at Souk Al Bahar with front row seat for the fountains, don't think they serve alcohol though if you are looking for a drink
