Has anyone had one ? Just wondering how much of a difference it make a big difference to mobility. Particually interested in young people who have had this done.

My sister in law had a hip replacement a couple of years ago at the age of 41, after 2 pregnancies like yourself and a lifetime of suffering. By the time she plucked up courage to have the op (very nervous about the whole thing) she could only walk with a stick and was in constant agony, unable to sleep and living on painkillers. Her op was carried out at Wrightington in England and the care she received was exemplary; she was also very proactive in helping herself and preparing before the surgery (for example, making sure she had a chair of the correct height to sit on whilst recuperating, access to a walk-in shower, exercises as directed). The difference it has made to her and her active family is astounding and it's taken years off her. Good luck with your decision.

Is hip resurfacing an option? DH had both hips done at 50 and 51 as this is more suitable for younger patients and full hip replacements can be done later if needed. It's still a new procedure and not all the answers are known I.e. How long they'll late but dh is thrilled with his and has suffered no side effects 6 years down the line. He even managed to walk down 75 flights of stairs in a new building here as he was sick of waiting for the cradle lift to reach the roof! Funnily enough everywhere hurt for a week later apart for his hips! Both ops were done at Nuffield hospital privately in the UK. Oooops just read the previous thread I think we are talking about the procedure. ;) edited by lal1 on 21/01/2011

Sorry to hear you are suffering JS. My DH recommends you take a look at www.surfacehippy.info , if you haven't already. Theres loads of case studies of people with all types of hip problems. He did tons of research on there before taking the plunge, but as I said, he was a good candidate for resurfacing and didn't need the full replacement. It is a big op and I was quite nervous but having had poor mobility and pain since his mid 20's it has been life altering for him, especially as he's a keen sportsman.

Thanks for the info. I'm 33 had/have perthes disease was never caught or treated when I was younger. Had two pregnancies now and really struggling with it, I am just walking soo badly. I just wanted to hear of others as to who treated them, what they had done, how long recovery was, what was used metal/ceramic joint and how long it would last for.

My husband is in his twenties , he had avascular necoris of the femoral head and neck this was a side effect from a super bug he caught here. Anyway he could not walk at all we were seeing dr tarabichi at the american hosp he advised cementing the hip to the pelvis which is a very old practice my dh would never be able to walk properly again. We did not agree with his conclusion so did our own reaserch and. Found dr hooley who did the birmingham total hip replacements in hong kong. I thank god we found him and. The birmingham hip replacement, which is fantastic for young active people. My dh plays tennis , swims and ocassional squash. If you want to ask any more questions feel free. Personally we found that no other hip replacement was going to give him a comfertable way of life especially with thd options we were given in dubai. All the best

Young as in what age? Presently you can only have two hip replacements in the same joint so normally under 40 has to be thought about very hard. Just know someone who had one done at Rashid, the care was diabolical comparative to Uk.

Hi, my DH had double hip resurfacing last year. First one was done at home in Ireland and 2nd one here 6 weeks later by Dr Chris Wately at Medcare. He's only 35 and I cannot tell you the difference it has made to the quality of his life, it truly is amazing. I understand it's not exactly the same op but similar, in fact, had this op not gone well a full replacement would have been next. HTH and let me know if want anymore info. edited by mimi on 21/01/2011 edited by mimi on 21/01/2011
