There are many new Canadians who have no intention or desire to live in Canada long term. I work with one (and have worked with others who have no intention of living anywhere else but Canada). Someone referred to the former as Canadianese. They have met the terms and conditions of the Canadian government to get a Canadian passport. I would like the Canadian government, as do many other countries, require immigrants to renounce their "citizenship" with their birth country and take on the Canadian passport only. The person I work with has no intention of returning to Canada and will live in a 3rd world country until and unless (witness Beirut in 2005) they feel they "need" to go to Canada at the expense of the Canadian regular citizen. Before anyone asks. I spend 2 - 3 months in Canada (vacation time) per year and have no desire to live anywhere else permanently (I live in the GCC and earn $$$ like 99.99% of all of the expats here togo back to my HOME country and retire and spend $$ and pay taxes). The person I specifically refer to has no desire or intention of doing that, his idiotic email messages reflect it "greetings from God's country Kerala" and his real estate investments there (and divestments in Canada) confirm it. He is not shy about using the Canadian immigration system - and that's what burns most Canadians, you want to come you want to stay you want to contribute, welcome!! Otherwise, make your own country work. In many instances you have a democracy (in this particular case the largest in the world) - USE IT. *applauds*

Hi Hunts You might get your mom to look into that further as I have a friend with a parent in the same situation and if I remember our conversation properly they can't use their UK passport to get around this as they are residents of Canada not the UK. Only mentioning this as I would hate for it all to got pear shape for your mom when she gets to the airport trying to get here.

I doubt you will get any flak over that one Hunts :)...Your mum lives in Canada and it makes sense for her to have dual passports to lower her cost :)....

That has to be one of the highest visa fees EVER, so yes I think it will. Not to mention they seem to forget that reps from the two biggest oil companies come from Canada on business alot - they'll go talk to Russia, far cheaper. I hope Canada in turn make their visa fees for nationals sky high! UAE is MUCH safer than Russia, and for a big Corporation a $1000 for a multiple entry visa would just be absorbed, it might irratae then - but far cheaper than the security costs of having executives in russia.

My mother is coming to visit and her flight was already booked before all this. But she is a smart cookie is my Mum. She was born in the UK but immigrated and has lived in Canada for over 35 years. She gave up her UK passport as it was fine to always travel on her Canadian one and the UK one was an added cost they didn't need. However now the UK passport is less expensive to have than the visit visa fee required to come here! As she will now be visiting more often as her new Grandson is here is make sense to get her British Passport. So for any of the Canadians coming to visit that might have immigrated and are lucky enough to be able to have another passport (waiting for the comments on this one) then look at the cost of travelling on a different passport! I agree this whole visa thing is ridiculous. But after talking to a SA lady yesterday the Canadians get off lightly. When her parents come to visit it costs the 1000 AED deposit (returned once proved left the UAE) and 1000 AED for the visit visa!!

that is just plain stupid. I think, none of the airlines think for themselves. I wonder if anyone had a problem getting through immigration here?

They told her that the transit visa rules changed yesterday from 96 hours to 12 hours so she would have had to get a new visa sponsored by us. She was not flying Emirates and was not staying at a hotel and she works at a travel agency and has been trying to get further information since November. They did not give enough info and posted new 'terms' on the 1st. Really bad. KLM were unhelpful and turned away a good portion of passengers.

My sister just got to the airport in Toronto and was turned away by KLM because her 'transit visa' through Dubai wasn't issued in time and they changed the requirements this morning. As she is not staying in a hotel and only here for 4 days (96 hours), we are now supposed to go and get one for her. Too late, they turned her away and now she has a flight change fee and it's not worth it! I am so sad!!!
