It's pretty much irrelevant what the laws and rules are in our home countries, and whether people in those countries adhere to them or not. We are in the UAE, and it has been repeatedly made clear through the media that doing any kind of paid job is only legal if done while employed on a employment visa, a husband visa (with NOC), working for a legally operating business. Or while owning a trade license/legally owning a business. EW forum sees a lot of these discussions going on with regards to baby sitting, maids, tutoring etc. And whether we like it or not, it's simply just not legal. Whatever we think is o.k, or whatever we like, is totally irrelevant. If people choose to do so anyway, risking huge fines and deportation, that's up to them. But we should stop endorsing it, and maybe EW should stop allowing these threads to run for so long. I know what you mean but at the same time, if enough people come together and speak against certain things, there may be a chance that they would, perhaps, consider changing them. There's nothing wrong with having a discussion or expressing discontent with certain laws. We are constantly reminded that we are only "guests" here. And yes, I may be a guest but I was also born here. I spent almost my whole life here. If it were a different country, I'd already be a citizen. Can't I at least have the right to say I may be displeased about something. It's not about being guests in this country, it's accepting that there are laws here that everyone needs to follow. And it's wrong to endorse illegal practices. There are many threads where people are offering their "services", and where other EW ladies are pointing out to that that's not allowed, only to get the reply that "she" doesn't think it's wrong, and is just trying to make some cash. It's not about what we think, it's about it being illegal. I am not telling anyone not to voice your opinions, but to say it's all ok to do is not right. if you choose to hire illegal labour, up to you, if you want to take the risk..

Why don't you call homelypetz maybe they hire ? But they are not licensed to walk dogs either. Oh dear! Walking dogs needs a license?? If it is to earn money, then yes. Walk the dog and accept a 'thank-you' gift of money, would that be acceptable? I think as long as it's a private transaction, why would anyone have a problem with it? I remember when I was studying for my A levels back when I was in school my parents got me a private tutor. She was a housewife but used to be a teacher back in the UK. They'd pay her by the hour. I don't see why this is so wrong and should be deemed "illegal" to be honest. Sometimes it's hard to grasp how things work here.

If it is to earn money, then yes. no idea how and if they are licenced but my pets love their services and so do I as without them my rescued dog would still roam the streets as I wouldn't be able to have her without a walk in the middle of day, so frankly I don't care.

I'd suggest volunteering, too. I suppose some people do work privately though to make some extra cash here and there by tutoring, babysitting, etc. Yes but who would leave their child with a stranger who isnt covered in the case of emergencies? etc plus if the police were called there would be trouble Not worth the risk Plenty of posters on EW would. I've seen posts asking for babysitters many times. Your second point makes sense, but aside from the legalities, it's not any different than "back home" edited by Expatriate on 26/09/2012 Except it is illegal here and not in the UK but each to their own :-)

One of my friends also teaches piano privately. I think that as long as the people you are offering this service to trust you, you're not going to get into any sort of legal trouble (unless, of course someone reports you for some reason). edited by Cheezu on 26/09/2012

I'm pretty sure that it is illegal to charge for this service unless you do it through your own or somebody else's registered company But volunteering through a registered charity would be fine
