Kids's fruit or vegetable costumes - help!

It's Fruit & Vegetable Day at school on Thursday and my kids are all supposed to go in dressed as either a fruit or a vegetable! Ridiculous!!! I can't believe there's any point in trying the costume shops, because no child would ever want to buy such a costume and dress up in it on a regular basis. I'm not a gifted costume maker myself either. Any suggestions?

Why be one vegetable. Dress as King / queen of vegetables. Wear green clothes and make a crown of vegetables. Veg that are light and hang like spring onions, nicely washed lettuce leaves, strips of carrot etc. - tie them on a ribbon and place around DS / DD head. Other ideas - Braclet of beans strung together. I dressed as the queen of veg. for a fancy dress competition when I was little and won first place. Loved the idea and dressing up. Hated most of the veggies. :) BTW - the weather is perfect for this as the veggies won't wilt of spoil as easily. But check how long your child has to wear the costume. With my costume, it was easy to get out of. I basically took off the veggies when we were done and stayed in my shiny green clothes. Loved being queen. Also had twins come as Two Peas in a Pod.

Thanks for the offer Freckles, but it's too small for my kids. Love the butternut squash idea though!

Justmake two cut outs of an orange ,apple or tomato from red/orange chart paper. Attach the the 2 cutouts with satin ribbon and put it over your child's head so that the ribbons are on his/ her shoulders. It's quick and easy. Hope i'm making sense. ;)

there are bound to be some pumpkin halloween outfits left in some of the party shops - see if they will sell at a reduced price! edited by Clairehdp on 17/01/2011
