JS So good to hear that you plan to go visit her soon. You know when I'm talking about something with my mother that we both disagree on, the discussion gets heated and we both get upset and not very logical. In preparation for your visit, I would suggest that you do what another poster suggested and write her a letter beforehand. But in this letter, I think you should identify the different issues that are bothering you: 1. your emotional distance with your mother. 2. your concern for your 27 year old brother who is probably exhausted with his three jobs, depressed about your mother and like you mentioned, isolating himself in his room. 3. your opinion about why your 19 year old brother is acting the way he is. When you're discussing the first point, for example, you should mention that you feel like you cannot talk with her and share with her and that you would like to have a close relationship with her. And then suggest how that could be achieved; do you both like cooking - could she share her secret recipes with you during your calls. Could she maybe dig up some old pictures and send you one each week in a letter with a little story about that picture. The second point and third point are tricky cause you don't want your mum to think that you are accusing her illness of being a reason for both your brothers' behavior. But I really think that a portion of the money that you and your earning brother are contributing should be set aside for a carer to come in every weekend or something so that your 27 year old brother also gets a break. And for your youngest brother, I think not having a father figure around may be the reason for his immaturity. And obviously, because he can get away with this behavior with your mother, he tries to do the same with you. I think the best option would be if your other brother asserted his male authority and sat down with him and made it clear that you two are the breadwinners and that neither of you will put up with him unless he makes some changes. Once you put words down on paper, I think things will automatically become clearer for you. And if you use this letter as a point of reference for your eventual face-to-face discussion with your mum - you will see that things are less likely to be misinterpreted because they are logically identified. And I also wanted to suggest that I know it must not be easy to go back to university with a full-time job but why don't you consider one of the professional certificates being offered in Dubai. They are generally evening or weekend classes and are highly considered by employers during recruitment and yearly assessments. Wishing you the best. ETA - Sorry for the long post! <em>edited by em2san on 22/03/2011</em>

Izzy99, you sound like my mum in ur 1st paragraph.. my bro definitely has emotional issues but since him and mum are not admitting his problem, I am unable to help.. Holly, I guess you are right, it must be scary to think that she will pass on and leave such an immature and selfish young son with anything but unconditional support from somewhere. I know.. the problem is she doesnt seem to say it loud.. My mum was hit by cancer 10 yrs ago and at that time my bro was 9 yrs old, of course seeing her suffering from treatments in addition to my dad around were not the perfect ingredients to build his personality.. and I know that he has lot of issues.. the problem is with my mum refusing the fact that he is got issues.. The way she cares about him is just soooo much furstrating... I cannot even count in a long list what she do but it is just unbelievable. Gorobattie, yes my dad's genes are definitely alive in my bro :( and that's what I keep saying to myself, one day he will find himself alone as you said.. and at that time i will have my family to take care of.. I am planning to go for 2 nights visit by mid April, I have to go to see her.. despite everything.. If I leave work and if I ever need help, will any of them be there for me.... loooooooool of course not.. not even in my dreams.

My dear, your dad's jains(spl?) are alive in your younger brother, he will be the same, your mum doesn't want to face the truth, and having the Helsinki syndrome, Ignore your brother, try to be nice with your mum, if you can, you and your other brother both can take care of your mum's treatment, and remember to live your life in the process. I have a similar thing to you, but not to much fights - well we fight all the time - and my mum stand by her other children, and ignore me as child for her - me too I started my life away from family, become a supporter, then after I stayed at home, surprise surprise, no one care about me anymore, last time I had visited my family home, I had a fight then My brother and baby sister wanted to through me out of the home - forgetting this is not their home either, and if I didn't call them, no one will call...... get over this, 10 years from now, your young brother will find himself alone with no proper education, and his friends will have their own lives, but don't fell to emotional extortion dear. Good Luck.

I think there's a lot to what em2san said. Perhaps your mum is reacting protectively to "the weakest link". It must be scary to think you might pass on and leave such an immature and selfish young son with anything but unconditional support from somewhere. Please consider simply cutting and pasting your original post in a note to her. It may help shift the focus from your "perceived aggrievances" with your brother, to plain and simple - your needs, which are important.

Perhaps your younger brother is acting like this because he can't handle the situation. He is at home and he sees how sick your mum is - you say he is immature for his age.... perhaps he can't process all the emotions that he has, so he attacks those closest to him. Not that this should detract from the great sacrifice you are making for your family Hugs

em2san, I totally agree with you, the thing is I told her before the fight 100 times that I will support my bro only if he changes his attitude and I am not saying that I will give him instructions on daily basis and make his life miserable but at least he must have some respect to me.. to his family.. He has no respect to anyone including his own mum (who is fine with that but I AM NOT!!). He curses her and others in her own presence and she doesnt say a single word to him, he keeps yelling and screaming at anything she says that he didn't want to hear, she didn't raise him well. What I dont understand does she knows at least in her thoughts even if she doesnt say it loudly that what he is doing is wrong.. I wish I can lie but I am not like this at all, I cannot pretend and say that I still love my brother as you are suggesting that I tell my mum. I went through a lot with my father and it wasn't the childhood anyone would want to live. After the latest fight with my bro all I can see in him is a PHOTOCOPY of my father.. I hope one day my bro changes, not for me, but for his own and to be a successful person.. If he decided to change, I will be there for him but if he remains the same, I cannot have him at all in my life. Sometimes I wish if i can close my eyes and when I open them, just wake up with a new memory. I wish I can forget lot of things that I have went through with my parents.. I wish my mum was a stronger person who can fight for herself against the people who deserve that.. Despite the bad treatment she went through with dad she never tried to fight for herself and now she brought for me and my 1st bro another copy of dad.. When I get married, I will do my best to raise a good family and I don't want someone like my bro to mess up our life, I just want peace.. peace.. of mind and in my heart. <em>edited by JS on 21/03/2011</em>

JS, I'm the oldest child and the only daughter as well. And my mother has a much closer relationship with both of my brothers and specially with the youngest who she still treats like her 'baby". Our similarities do end here because even though my mother and I don't get along very well but we are not estranged as you are with your mother. I just wanted to suggest that in my opinion, the reason why I think your mother is being aloof to you is because you have made it clear to her that you do not approve of your younger brother and that you resent supporting him. She may favor your youngest brother but I am sure that she is well aware that he is immature and unable to stand on his own feet. Since she is sick, she must be very worried about how your brother would handle himself if she was not there to fend for him. Though she may not show it, I'm sure that she is very proud of you and your other brother for supporting yourself and the rest of the family. However, I think that in the current situation, if you really want to heal your relationship with your mother, you need to let her know that you love her AND your youngest brother. And that even if something happened, you would support him but that you have certain conditions [such as: he should go to university, get a job, send you a copy of his monthly expenses, learn to budget, et cetera'>. *hugs* for you.

Well, I made it clear to mum before that I will not take care of my small bro when she is no longer around.. I said if he needed like 200$ before the end of the month when he runs out of money then I will send to him only a small amount and in this case only but after what he did and the way he treated me, I am not talking to him now for around 5 months (maybe more) and definitely I am not going to help him and I will not promise mum that I will. My birthday was few days ago, my bro is a friend on my facebook so in case he forgot he is got that reminder and he didn't at least put Happy Birthday Sis on my wall. Thank you very much ladies. I am going to print out this thread and take it home with me so I can read all your replies carefully.

Think you need to stand back and have a read read of your thread. you may see some of the answers in your own writing if you try and see it as someone else writing. Your a good person who finds it difficult to turn your back even when someone is not nice , well time you turned away and yes give your mother some support but try not to continue to be a door mat. I know she is ill and may not last too long but her habits are not new and not having good influence on you. Your younger brother is very young at 19 years old, and it will take him many years to learn. As another poster said try not to make promises as duty will make you feel bound and from what you have written so far that would certainly not be fair for you. you need to go on with your life and build a life and maybe have a family and focus on them .

Try and avoid making a promise to your mother to look after your little brother when she's gone. You and your older brother will doubtless feel duty bound to keep the promise and it won't be easy.

SueB, my 27yrd old bro tried same as me with my small bro but there is no point. I feel sorry for him as he spends most of the time when he is at home in his room with his door closed, he just disconnects himself from what happens inside the house with my small bro. They used to fight a lot then he becomes fed up, even when he sits with mum and tells her that they way she is raising my small bro is wrong, she seems to understand for few hours only and then my small bro manages to do the brainwashing again for her. Now he works a lot from his office in the newspaper, he takes mum to hospital and help with anything she needs.. Sometimes he thought of leaving mum and my small bro in one house and to move to a small apartment by himself.. but he feels sorry that my mum is sick and that she might need him to be around at night so he is not moving to another apartment.. I know that he is not happy to and last time I went back home, we both agreed then when our mum goes, we will BOTH not support our small bro in anything, let him fight for himself!! <em>edited by JS on 21/03/2011</em>

JS my heart goes out to you. I have witnessed so many similar stories and it is heart breaking to hear of people having such issues with their parents. I had a very loving father, May God rest his soul in peace, and my mother is adorable. But then I have huge issues wid my older teenage son....so life is a leveller and everyone has issues to deal wid. Just be a good person and do your best and leave the rest in Gods hands. I like simples suggestion that u should consider going back home 2 b wid your mum in her last days. She obviously craves your company as u said she complains that u r not by her side. I wish you all the best and send u a hug. Take care of yourself x

As an aside-it seems to niggle you that you never had a chance to do your degree-don't forget in the future you can always do it-one subject a year if necessary to spread costs-maybe by correspondance as you are working hard-don't give up on your own dreams

"I am sure your mum does apreciate all you have done and continue to do as mine did-she simply may not have the energy to focus on your younger brother's selfishness or do anything about it" Waffles, yes she might not have the energy to focus on my brother's selfishness, I give her that excuse.. I admire you for nursing your mum.. Honestly the though of loosing my mum anytime hurts.. I always think about her, always always she is in my mind and i really love her. ladies, thank you so much all I speak to mum every 2 days, short phone calls, every time I tell her that I love her but the thing is, she just doesn’t talk with me as she used to do before. She wants me to agree with her when saying good things (again in her opinion) about my small bro which in my opinion is just stupid and not correct. My stupid bro whom she considers a genius simply didn’t continue his education not even a high school!! I have a high school only and I didn’t want him to go through what I went though before and my mum knows very well that my life was not an easy one! If I had a degree where I work now I would have earned triple my salary and I don’t have one because I wanted to support them, because I am the eldest and I had to suffer so they live a good life, in a big house with everything they need. As for my bro, last thing I told him before he leaves Dubai: You will always be my Bro but if you don’t have respect to me, you don’t appreciate what I have did for you, and if you don’t want to listen to my advice, then just go away, I don’t want you in my life” and I told mum: “If you think that what he is doing is right, it doesn’t mean that I have to agree with you if I don’t think it is”. And she was just screaming at me supporting him. You will not believe what I have went through when they were here, he laughed at dubai fountain and said it is not impressive at all, he kept cursing at anything and without real reasons, he didn’t like any food he ate in the 5 stars restaurants I took him to, and imagine we were at the meat restaurant in atlantis and I ordered the most expensive dish for his Royalty and he was disgusted from the meat’s smell and my mum (instead of eating her dish) was actually cutting the big piece of meat for him into small pieces and feeding him in the fork!!!! He is 19yrs old not 2 yrs old anymooooooore!! My mum doesn’t understand that her little boy will end up to be a very bad person as he grows up, what I tried to explain as by entertaining his behavior she is making him a bad and selfish person more and more every day. As for the money I send them, of course I need it but I cannot stop sending it. My 27yrs old bro is a very wise person, he works in 2 newspapers and a TV (so 3 jobs), he works all day until very late at night, he drives a cheap car and he tries as much as possible not to spend on unnecessary things, he had a very old mobile until I got him on his birthday a new one, he never asked me to get him something when I go on vacation so since that big fight with mum I started sending to him the money directly and I am 100% sure that he is using it wisely. I am aware of loans he took from the newspaper where he works to help more with my mother’s treatment. Himself was giving my mum kind of pocket money until one day he decided that he will pay directly to grocery and he will buy her anything she wants but he will not give her too much pocket money because while he tries to save as much as possible for her treatment my mum goes and give the money to 19 old bro!!

JS-I am sure your mum loves you-even of she has an odd way of showing it. I nursed my dear mum through cancer-stayed home from work and cared from her 24/7. She was bed-ridden, in incredible pain and not the easiest patient. Once every couple of weeks my brother would turn up to visit and she pulled out all the stops-sat up in bed and was so animated and happy-to the extent he was stunned when she died as he really thought I was exaggerating her illness. Looking back I think she needed this though it did hurt at the time. My brother sort of symbolised how things were whereas I had seen her at her very worst and in some ways reminded her she was sick.I am sure your mum does apreciate all you have done and continue to do as mine did-she simply may not have the energy to focus on your younger brother's selfishness or do anything about it. Continue to try and build bridges with her-and please give yourself a big hug too-sounds like you have done everything you can and more over the years

JS, I'm sorry, I don't know what to say, except that I feel for you. I'm glad that at least, you have your older brother, who seems to understand and be there to help out. Is it not possible for you to take a holiday back home to see your mother and when you're there, buy her stuff specifically for herself, don't give her money so she can't give it to your little brother? BTW, it is really not unusual for the youngest son to be treated in this way, by both parents, so don't think you've done something wrong, you haven't. Congratulations, too, on what you have achieved and on being able to support your mother financially in the first place. Very wise post Simple......to the OP, some mothers just can't help themselves, for them the sun will always shine on one child. You have been and are being a very good daughter, shame she can't be a better mother. And one day you will be repaid by the love of your own children, think of it as just paying it forward.

Agree with Kid Vs Kat and I would like to add, why not pay the rent directly to the landlord? I would certainly not be sending money for medical treatment with a bill. I would contact the hospital and find out how much is owed. Your brother might be siphoning off a chunk of money. You can tell your mom that it will be easier on her if you pay these directly so she will not have to do it :)...your older brother can do the same. Why is your older brother not insisting on the baby getting work and contributing? From the sounds of things JS, you have bent over backwards to support your family to your own detriment and other than your mum, I think it is time for our brother to get a life. You can still support your mother in the rent and hospital but by paying those directly so you know exactly how much is owed. It sounds as if giving your mum the money is not working as she is giving it to your brother and that is just not right as he is old enough to support himself. JS on the mother side. It is very sad that your mum is not the mum you want or need but this often happens when the baby is a boy unfortunately. Write her the letter, lay down some ground rules in regards to the money. Stand up for yourself and stop letting them run over you forward and backward with the *needy* truck lol. You are a good person who loves her family and they are taking advantage of that. Anyway, good luck kiddo....I have been there :)

Agree with Kid Vs Kat advise, writing a letter to your mum and telling her how much you love her and want to support her are the main things you need to tell her during this time. You may never understand why she treats you this way or takes your brothers side however she will know that she has a daughter that loves her very much. I had not spoken with my father for many months (12 maybe) before last May 2010 when I received a call from home he had cancer (52 yrs old). The worst thing was we never had a bad word between us, just grew apart, he was not too involved in my life growing up (parents divorced) but when I got that call I couldn't get home quick enough just to say I loved him. We were never told how agressive it was as my dad did not want us to worry, I returned to Dubai and 6 weeks later went home again to be by his side and say good bye. You never know when the time will come, you need to do everything now to make peace and although its not fair how you are feeling and treated, there isnt time to hold a grudge. I wish you the best and pray for your mothers health also.

JS, my heart goes out to you. May I suggest that you write this all down and send it to your mother. She will read it. My point is that she is not well and you really must leave nothing unsaid, you may not get the answers you want but at least you will have been heard. As for your brother. Perhaps a letter to him too saying to the effect "I love you but I cannot support your behaviour and lifestyle". Please do not feel the need to continually support people who will not give back. They may be family but really, they are not acting like it. Both your mum and your little brother have made poor choices in their lives, you cannot help that. What you can do is to work hard to make your life the best it can be. Focus on your needs and your future and if you have a spare penny, put it away for you. You will need it one day. As for your mothers medical care, can you pay the hospital directly? If not, reconsider your contributions, they may not be making a difference to her life.... .This will make you a stronger person.

Thank you all. I didn’t try again with my brother regarding the website, last time I spoke to him was last year when he was in Dubai. Since then he didn’t speak to me and my mum didn’t try to fix anything. I asked him to help me with the website as I thought my own bro would be happy to help his older sister.. Especially when he saw my excitement with the products I have, I was explaining to him about the product as I thought it would be easier to explain to him then to go to someone strange from the people who build up websites as they might not understand well the idea.. Anyway that website is not big deal anymore and anyway the products will be soon available on a very well known and famous website in Dubai.. I don’t need my bro, I just felt so astonished from the way he treated me.. It is worth mentioning that my father didn’t pay either for my school education because he was more busy in setting up businesses (unsuccessful) and spending most of his money on drink.. So my grandma and my aunties who lived between Dubai, Saudi and Italy always sent my father the money to pay for my school. I am still sending money to my mum even after the fight and I cannot stop sending them the money because they need it but only because my mum is still alive.. the only thing I feel sad about is that as I said I will loose her anytime soon but I will never be able to express my love to her.. She doesnt understand.. I feel bad because she is sick but it hurts that she prefers my brothers more than me.. I cannot split myself in 2, either I work and support them or I leave Dubai and sit next to her .. but who will pay then for treatments and house rent.. sometimes I think that maybe the treatment is not making her think wisely..

i just wanted to add this..... as difficult as it seems, PLEASE focus on the fact that your mom might not be here for too long. Ignore all the unnecessary drama from you "teenage" brother and focus on the relationship with your mom. you need to get your priorities right, it sounds like there is a lot of resentment towards your parents. Trust me every family has it... you've just got to know how you deal with it. Bitterness and resentment is not good for the soul Do what you can for your Mom and focus on your life. Good luck.

Despite what most people say I don't believe blood is thicker than water. When someone makes you feel small and unimportant a toxic relationship begins, it can be very difficult for either side to change once words are said and emotions felt. It is up to you what you do but if I had a friend like that I would cut them out of my life, for me family is no different in that. Why do we put up with unhealthy relationships from family when we wouldn't accept such behaviour from ones friends? I no longer speak to my father (6.5 years now) for that reason. Yes it's hurtful when he still doesn't try to repair the problem, however it also justifies my decision to me. I realise my response is very biased but I can only tell you from my own experience that I would rather have people around who love, care, cherish and respect me than people who don't. People who make me laugh, rather than cry. Take care, I know this is difficult.

I am so sorry to read your email and many familes have similar issues. I am a lot older than you and it is only now I am coming to terms with the selfishness of my own mother and favouring anothersibling who turned out just like her and like you thought it was my fault but it was not. Thankfully you are realising this at a younger age and sibling challenges can be so difficult. I am not sure what else to say right now but please do not blame yourself the issues are with your mother who does not see what she is doing. Don't bother asking your brother for computer help , find someone else if you can but in the end if you really have to ask him do and tell him you are not in a position to pay him if he still won't help keep clear. I am sure there will be kind ladies here who will give you good solid caring sensitive advice.
