derbend, why not start with just walking 15 min away then 15 min back and see how you like it :)...the weather is lovely right now. Put your baby in the pram and start walking comfortably for a couple of minutes, then speed up a bit until at 5 min you have a bit of a glow on :)....THEN ramp it up for 30 sec and bring it down for one minute.or 2....do this for 20 min if you can, then go home. Your baby gets air and so do you and you get to exercise rather than stroll :). It is a start while you are thinking what you should buy. You might find you enjoy this much more than being inside on a machine. The machine can wait until summer :) Here is a great site for walking music. You can download a whole 30 min to music you like and you can walk to the beat which is very motivating and mood uplifting lol.... www.mywalkingmusic.com they have both singles you can download and complete walks.....give it a try, it is alot cheaper than a machine. You might also (if you feel ambitious) do this in the afternoon as well. On the other end of the spectrum doing it 3x 15 min also works but you have to work harder in those 15min :) the whole idea is to 'move' edited by SueB on 13/01/2011

my cousin also loves cross trainer but the one she bought is very hard to do and same is the experience of my DH so i am a bit reluctant to buy it ... i have used a stationary cycle in the past and i think if i buy it i will use it (and not hang clothes on it ;) ) but i believe its not very effective as far as weight loss has anyone lost any major amount of weight using a stationary cycle or knows anyone who has done that? my question to all those who think cross trainer or eliptical trainer is the way to go ... do you know anyone OBESE (as i fall in that category now :( ) using it and being able to do it regularly ... i also have an umbilical hernia frannie: i thought 30 day shred was for already slim people who want to be fit ... isnt it hard for someone who has to lose like 20 kg to reach their healthy weight sue B: that's a nice idea but i dont have that kind of budget and cant leave kids anywhere ... so have to live by the DH's reviews phokoje: i m not in a villa gosshhh i m asking too many questions

Cross trainer without a doubt - great for all round fitness and kind to your knees/ankles etc. We bought one from Life Fitness - expensive - but we're all using it !

if you are in a villa and have stairs, then just run up and down them every day. DH started doing this in the evenings after work building up from doing 10 up 10 down to 100(i know!!!!) and has lost 6kgs. he says its the best thing he has ever done. it means he doesnt have to spend any money and more importantly it only takes 20 minutes in the evening after DD has gone to bed so he doesnt miss any time with her either which he would if he was having to go to the gym. hth

The gym fitness equipment is usually heavier/sturdier as it has to withstand alot more use but you certainly can find home equipment that mimics the gym equipment. We have a nordictrax treadmill which we love, it is sturdy, takes abuse etc and is equal to any at a gym. You have to try a machine at least 6 times before your body gets comfortable with the new rhythm, that is why taking a month to find the right machine is a good idea :)

Hi ladies where do i find the january shredding thread and what is it.? .i am desperate to lose weight. to OP I tried a cross trainer last week, didnt like it. I think Gym equipment in a fitness club is alot different to equipment thats made for home use. personally i like the manual bikes with tension controller and not the plug in electrics one with computer tyte monitor. with a bike I watch my favourite programme for half hour without really noticing how much exercise is done.

go and enroll in gym on a 1 month trial. try all the machines to see which you enjoy the most and will use. A week on each machine will tell you because yu body will have to get used to the motion..so, dont rush out, test run then buy...sales are coming soon anyway ;). The machine will only be of benefit if you like using it and you are consistant :) if you buy one you have not tried, you might not use it so it will look lovely with clothes hanging from it because you will begin to hate it lol

I had a tight budget and I like the using the treadmill so I bought a cross trainer. I know that sounds weird but I knew that a treadmill in my price range would not have all the options that would make sure I didn't take it too easy. However a cross trainer, regardless of price, would give me an upper and lower body workout. I live in a one bed so it sits out where I can see it and all I need to do is pop in a dvd and jump on. If the movie is really good or it has a good soundtrack I can go for an hour only stopping for a drink. When I first started I could barely manage 20 minutes. There have been times on the weekend where I have done 15 minutes when I get up, 15 minutes when I take a study break, 15 minutes before dinner and 15 minutes before my shower giving me 60 minutes of solid exercise that day. [i'>* I am not a fitness fanatic and call exercise a necessary evil :) * [/i'>

Save your money and do the 30 day shred! Check out the "January Shredding Thread" for support. It's only 20 mins per day and IT WORKS.

whatever machine you choose what makes it work is that you use it regularly... So treadmills have their benefits and elliptical machines have their benefits.... but with an elliptical you will be using both upper and lower body at the same time... I prefer jogging so I got a treadmill but because I now get shin splints I should have bought an elliptical instead...

PS just be aware if you are still breast feeding that your ligaments will still be all soft....I didn't realise this and have hurt my wrist - cross trainer didn't do it - the shred did - which is a great thing as well to do while the babes are asleep - all you need is weights

A cross trainer or eliptical trainer, it works the most muscle groups at once, and mirrors the movement of cross country skiing which is one of the best forms of cardio vascular exercise

my girlfriend who had a baby also about a year ago swears by her eliptical machine, she loves it! And she lost a ton of weight! The good thing about them is they are low impact, so it's safe on your joints, but it also works your entire bod! Legs, booty, abs and arms! I think it would be the best bang for your buck...geeze I sound like a sales person LOL I'm preggers and I'm going to try and talk the hubby into buying me one also :)

Hi derbend, Not a fitness fanatic, but my advice to you would be to choose a machine you enjoy the most. I personally like the stair master, but many people I know hate it. I hate the bike, but many I know like it. I also like running/walking on the treadmill and also like the x trainer a lot.... it really is a personal choice and the best machine is one you'll continue with rather than hate....

Hello ladies , a week from now my youngest is going to turn one and i still havent lost my pregnancy weight ... initailly my excuse to go to the gym was 'who will look after the kids' ... it occured to me only recently that i can buy a m/c and excercise when they are all sleeping ... so now the big question is which m/c to buy ... as in which one will be more effective to lose weight and since i m more than just a few kgs over-weight (bmi is 30) i dont think i'll be able to work on the difficult ones too ... DH tells that he has tried a cross trainer and that its too hard TIA
