In addition to pest control, caulking the entire house will hopefully seal the problem as the roaches are flexible and can squeeze in any gap - no matter how tiny. Sometimes roaches also migrate from the sink etc. and if so they won't last ages because you would have caulked the entire house. So they will have to have their babies elsewhere!

Mrs. Biju were you able to find a pest control co. yet? Because I have a voucher for 'Al Madeena Pest Control Services' that I brought from Living Social. Voucher is valid till Nov. 20th. The company came highly recommended to me + their credentials look good. I won't be able to make use of the voucher though. I paid 150aed for it (normally 275aed) but wld sell it for 100aed if you wanted to take it off me? Company's number is 042616032 or email: [email protected]. There's a 6 month warranty on the pest control + it's valid for a villa or an apartment. Just a note to everyone to say DO NOT use this company, they came a month ago to sort out a bug problem in the dishwasher, I kept saying that we had only ever seen bugs in the dishwasher, regardless they sprayed the entire house concentrating mainly on the drains - fair enough I thought - they're doing a thorough job. A week later I called them to say we still had a problem, they said to wait another week and call them which I did because we definitely still had a problem with the dishwasher. It took forever for them to let us book another appointment but eventually they said they could come this sunday before 12pm, my DH waited until 1pm, noone showed, I called them and they said they had no record of the appointment. I rebooked for today, they said again before 12pm, I didnt hear from them at all then called them at 11.30am to follow up - they said they were on their way - my DH left work and went home to wait. THey call me 3 times to get the location despite having been there once before. An hour later no sign, I call them and they give me a mobile number - the man says he is downstairs trying to get security to let him in, 20 mins later I call again, he says he is in the lift, 15 mins later and still no sign??? My DH has searched the building and they dont appear to be there at all! I will be very angry if they try to charge us again when they never actually addressed the problem in the first place, if they ever get there! - useless. But why am I surprised! (Sorry for the rant!)

Slakhani, I am so glad you reported back. Keep at it with the boric acid, dust the floor under all your white goods in the kitchen and leave it there, and when you go to bed sprinkle the whole kitchen floor as well (you can hoover it up in the morn). Even if you notice a few in the coming weeks don't despair. Oh and don't forget that the babies hatch in about 30 days, so keep repeating the process, until they have gone completely, it really does work, I have been amazed .:)

Dear Alismum and all the other ladies who suggested boric powder for cockroaches.... as with most other problems i had logged on to ask for help for cockroach control and lo and behold found this thread ...i had almost given up hope ..tried gel twice by a company to no avail...the cockroaches had taken over my kitchen...so much trouble as ecerything has to be washed before use ..and plus its just plain disgusting and so unhygienic! A HUGE HUMONGOUS HEARTFELT THANKS for the suggestion ...only 2-3 days of boric powder has taken care of most of the problem....ive noticed 70% reduction so hopefully getting there soon ! thanks ladies and EW which makes this all possible

I personally wouldn't go for the fumigation if you are already living there, who knows what chemicals they use and the safety aspect (long and short term) especially since some of the past 'so called food poisoning deaths' turned out to be insecticide poisoning. Anyway that's just me.

When we moved villa, we used Ridapest to fumigate and check for pests before we moved in. They gave me a flat fee, two men arrived promptly when agreed, explained what they would be doing, answered questions about potential effects on our pets and children and then, as part of the same fee, came and did a follow up check 10 days later. No problems here and I was very pleased with their service. They did the whole 6-bed villa inside and outside and the perimeters of our garden, so I thought they were very thorough. Didn't take very long either. That said, it was a couple of days before we moved in, so not sure about whilst you are living there. Would recommend calling them though.

Thank you very much Alismum. Such great help...and idea. i will try boric acid today. if not i will take ur advice and call madras. thanks once again. You get the Boric acid from Boots 6.50 dirhams per white container, it's called 'Greenswood Healthcare Boric Acid Powder'. Buy one or two depending on your villa/appt size, but you don't need to use much. I used about half a container over 2 weeks. With the boric acid this is what you have to do. Clean your kitchen, move the appliances from the wall (fridge, washing machine, dishwasher, cooker etc) and using something like a talc dispenser, squeeze a very fine dust on the floor under each appliance, so that the floor is covered, then push your appliance back. Be careful not to breath in the powder fumes as it gets on your chest (cover mouth with tea towel). You can do this in other areas where the roaches are, but do it predominantly under the kitchen appliances. I also placed the dust on kitchen floor when I went to bed (and hoovered it up in a morning), and near the entrances to the outside doors. (Note don't place it in clumps as they walk around it) If you have animals that may lick it up, then it might be better to go for the gel option, or if you have little kids under 5 that crawl on the floor... but generally I have read that it's a relatively non-toxic method of roach elimination, but saying this it's best to always err on the side of caution and keep kids and pets away, so doing it after the kids have gone to bed is the best option. The cockroaches will walk across the powder and it gets on their legs and they can't bear it so they lick it off and it destroys their digestive system. Then they take it to their nest and it kills the others. Repeat this method every day for a week or two until you stop seeing the roaches, but keep the powder under the appliances. This method can take a week or two depending on how many roaches you have. I was generally seeing a couple every day, mostly dead but I did see a couple look me in the eye. If you have 100s already then probably go for the gel option asap. I had tried the piff paff and it worked a bit but boric acid is definitely more effective, I haven't seen a roach in a month now, google it on you tube.
