Hi, what is required for a pre-marital medical examination in Sharjah and Dubai? Is it just blood tests, or will bp, weight, height, etc. be taken? Will we be asked to come back to the clinic, or will results be given over the phone?

Hi i just came back from barsha this morning. I went to umm suqeim health center first and they sent me to barsha, because apparently my residential address falls under al barsha health center. It's located right across the street from Al Barsha shopping mall, near to Mall of the Emirates. To make long story short - we both had to come there and we both have to come together for the result as they will discuss the result with both of us. If you are coming there first time, you have to register at the counter (go there both to one counter). It's being paid for both, AED 820 all inclusive and upon picking up the certificate (they told me 5-14 days depending on the lab) they'll charge us another 300 for doctor's consultation (150 each). They were asking us many questions, related to our status, if we are related, history of diseases in the family, they'll take blood pressure and weight note, short initial interview with the doctor follows (she was explaining that it's mandatory for every local or expat of whatever religion, who wish to get married in the UAE), then lab for taking the blood (they draw 4 test tubes) and then you are free to go home. If you want to check the status of your test, just call the reception, ask them to transfer you to the lab. Lab will search the record based on your health card (which you get upon registration at the counter) number. Once the lab confirms that the results are ready, you and your fiance need to show up there together along with 1 passport copy and 1 passport-size photo of each. They'll check your weight and bp again , prepare a blank certificate with your photo on in and send you to the doctor. The doctor will fill up your personal information in the form and check the results on the screen for each of you. If all is clear, they congratulate you and you are good to go home :) edited by CZ_Expat on 22/12/2014

To my knowledge and from personal experience, it is a requirement for anybody getting married under the Dubai system (i.e. muslim wedding validated at Dubai Courts) regardless of whether they are Emirati or not. It is possible it is required for marriages in churches etc too, not sure. There are several medical conditions that can result from intrafamily marriages (not sure this is a term:-) which are fairly common in this part of the world, so there is genetic screening and they also check if one or both are Thalassaemia carriers which is another common condition in the region. Accordingly they give you "permission" or they may highlight a risk factor (e.g. Thalassaemia). I guess only Maroosh has to do it here because her hubby to be in some other country? And that country requested some equivalent medical certificate to allow the wedding to happen?

Marooosh... congrats.. thats great news :).. i didn't know it was only required for GCC nationals because both me and hubby had to do it.. and we're both not GCC nationals.. i think it's a requirement for anyone who wants to get married here.. but is it ok if i ask why your husband to be doesn't have to do the test?

Marroosh, given what I've been reading recently about child brides in that particular part of the world, I presume there is not a minimum age for this check-up?

Wow it sounds like it is zooming full speed ahead. When is the day? Are your family going to be there?

Just to clarify the timings I mentioned, if you go after 6 pm (or 10 am) the lab might refuse you and tell you to come again next day. Before 6 you can visit the lab any time, from when the clinic opens. Hope I could explain it well. Thanks for the info:)

Hi Ladies, I need to do a premarital checkup, and i was told this is in Barsha. Can't find any information online, does anyone know how I can find it? Thanks! Mabrook Marroosh, Pre-marital test can be done in any of the health centers. you may even go to Al-Badae Health Center, which is behind Shangrila Hotel on SZR, next to Gems Wellington, near Canadian Uni n Union Coop. You and brother will register at the Counter (AED 150 for each), see the doctor, he will order some Blood tests for you. you will register again this time for the labs ,at the counter (AED 260 for each) and then proceed to the lab where your blood will be drawn. The results might take 5 to 10 days. If you want it urgent, kindly inform the doctor BEFORE he orders for the tests. Please take your passport along as the lab will need it for identification. Call the Lab after 7 days to find out if results are ready, if yes come again together register (AED 150 for each) and see the doctor to get the certificate. so the total is AED 1120/- HTH :-) Why would someone and their brother go for the check? We call a Muslim man a brother, and a Muslim woman a sister :) So the brother in question is my soon to be hub :)

It's just me who needs to do the check up, so cost will be half I guess. Do you know if they give the results in both Arabic and English? I don't want to have to have it translated, so if there is Arabic that would be great. I went to the center in Knowledge Village and they told me to go to Barsha. But anywhere will do really :) The certificate issued will be both in english and arabic mentioning the same result. The clinic opens at 07:30 am till 09:30 pm (sun- thurs) BUT blood collection for this test is done only BEFORE 06:00 pm. On saturday its open from 08:00 am till 01:00 pm so better to get the labs done before 10:00am if going on saturday.

a what ?? A premarital check up, I assume you can read? ouch !! I'm sorry, could you please explain what this is ? Sure I can :) It's a medical check up done before marriage. Mostly required when getting married to GCC nationals. My future hub is not GCC but in Yemen they require the same if a man is marrying a foreigner. They are blood tests done to see if you don't carry in scary diseases.

a what ?? A premarital check up, I assume you can read? I do think it's a little strong to say that on a forum in which you have just asked for advice/information. Maybe someone can help if you could kindly extrapolate rather than assume everyone knows what you mean. I don't know either.
