Something positive about Islam

I read this article from the Independent about despite all the negativity around Islam people still convert in their 1000's in Britain. I think it makes sense, I know many amazing Muslims, that when I read or hear negative things I always do my own research. Looks like that's what people do too.

I'm one person and I know 10 women converts a lone. All single, we met during uni mostly so nothing to do with marriage. I'm not a convert nor planning on converting. Just want to put a nice positive article up.

Dxb. Fairy - I wish EW had an option to "like" your thread. It was so refreshing to read in contrast with the mostly negative opinions about Muslims by EW'ers.

Tally-Ho -[b'> Muslims believe [/b'>that the Islam is the religion that was originally given to Adam, Moses, Jesus and, then, finally Mohammed (and in addition to many. many other prophets between Adam to Jesus). Islam was not invented with the Prophet Mohammed. It was through the Prophet Mohammed that the religion was perfected and to clarify and correct the messages that were delivered to the earlier Prophets which had become corrupt (for lack of a better word). Exactly Muslims believe.........As its against the rules to speak about religion on EW I shall refrain from posting any other comment.

Amused by the self-confessed 'convenience Muslims' converting because there's a perception halal prison food is better, and you get out of the cells for Frday prayer! I don't care for the arrogance of the label 'revert' - it's not exclusive to Islam, by any means, though. Catholics who became Protestants used to be referred to as 'perverts', because they were seen as deviating from the only true path. It just strikes me as an unhelpful position today, though, at a time when it seems more than ever important for Muslims and people of other faiths to respect one another's beliefs. But that means being non-defensive and open to debate and criticism on both sides.

I think it's lovely to have a religion that encourages taking a break from the rat race, tuning in and taking stock five times a day. It would be so nice to be a believer, sadly I'm not.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/crime/article7145784.ece Dame Anne Owers says that some convicted criminals are taking up the religion in jail to receive benefits only available to practising Muslims. The number of Muslim prisoners has risen dramatically since the mid-1990s — from 2,513 in 1994, or 5 per cent of the population, to 9,795 in 2008, or 11 per cent. Staff at top-security prisons and youth jails have raised concerns about the intimidation of non-Muslims and possible forced conversions

2,085 BC. Judaism, 560 BC. Buddhism, 30 AD. Christianity and 610 AD.- Islam Judaism came 1,500 years before Islam so it’s impossible that we are all born Muslim when the religion hadn’t even been invented

haha - there you go, we learn something. I should have made the thread title - Britons convert to Islam in 1000's LOL i'm sure it would have got more hits. Anyway, yeah just a small point as I get a bit of a knot in my stomach with so much negative posts and opinions on EW on their culture, religion, locals etc I keep thinking 'oh my gosh' I hope the Muslim EW members don't think we all think like that.

Yes we believe that all are born Muslim, so converts are actually reverts.

No correction - I wanted to know if she was right! I've heard both used and I wondered which was correct :).

I read a book called From My Sisters' Lips by Naimah B. Robert and she refers to conversion as reversion, as Muslims believe we are all born Muslim and those who convert are actually reverting to their birth religion. Is this right? It's an interesting read, and probably mentions many such people you met at uni. edited by DubaiCat on 25/01/2011
