Welcome to Dubai. Yes, it is lonely initially but then you'll make friends and it will be like you have lived here for ages :-)

Hi Shelz,
Sorry you're lonely, it's tough at first and my first few months here I was lonely and homesick but it improved quickly! I'm from SA too but as mommy of three I've mostly met other people with kids... However the best friends I've made have been at church, so I'd always suggest that as a good way to meet people!
SAWA is a brilliant idea, you should def go along.
I know a lady who makes SA goodies, if you post your email address I'll message you her details :)
Where are you staying? Near the Marina?
I often head to Make business hub with my laptop during the week and every time I go there I meet so many people, it almost interferes with my 'work'. Folk who freelance or work for themselves, and also plenty of company's use Make for meetings etc. Now, even if you arent writing a book or building a website, and even if you are just catching up on all your emails you can head in there (fast & free internet) and no-one would be any the wiser. Its full of creative young folk brainstorming and working and even writing ideas on a large chalkboard. It has a very social vibe about it. I get lonesome working from home and enjoy feeling like Im part of something there. They have recently started Thursday night classic movie nights - the popcorn is free and often do events during the week. I always go on my own and leave Dh at home and no-one seems to care and most folk there are on their own. http://makebusinesshub.com/ A good place to inadvertently meet people or at least feel 'part' of something. It also has amaaaazing food.
I also joined Ductac when I first got to Dubai (its in MOE) and I met so many people. They have theatre/ acting/ dance and art classes for adults and you get to learn something and meet new folk. http://www.ductac.org/ Enjoy and good luck !!

Tribes in MOE has melktert and cape malay curry and pumpkin scones, and More used to do bobotie and boerewors and definitely sell Rooibos as a "red espresso" and Starbucks has roobois tea as well. Waitrose & Spinneys sell Huis Genoot and You magazine every week, as well as Ouma rusks and Pronutro, and the Organic shop sells a surprising number of SA products - and has a SA section at the back.
I hope you make friends. I always house shared in Dubai and made lifelong friends like that, and some through work. Best of luck and vaasbyt !
Hi, welcome to Dubai. The place has a way of growing on you and before you know you will love it. I don't know of anybody that makes melktert and koeksister but to meet fellow South Africans try and go to the SAWA (South African Womens association) coffee morning. It certainly helped me.
