Is it a public school? Not sure how it works in the UK in terms of funding, but some school districts in the US award more funding to schools that have better attendance rates. So they might be pushing for that. Funding doesn't work like that in the UK, however truancy rates and unexplained absence rates do have an affect on inspections and Ofstead reports, last thing a school needs is to go under special measures.

Sounds like a state school initiative to try to influence and reward the children to not bunk off school and start the circle of truancy, schools probably given up with relying on the parents for this. 100% doubt genuine cases would be counted out only unexplained absences. No food at the cinema, no worries i'm sure the darlings can survive a few hours without eating.

So they might be pushing for that. Of course there should be exceptions for medical reasons -- that's just ridiculous. As for the snacks...eh, I'm on the fence about that one. It might have just been lack of planning and something for parents to mention for the next outing. Or maybe a logistical issue (ie no time to organise purchase of snack because they only had a limited time for the outing or not enough staff). edited by gleekfamily on 17/01/2011

These UK attendance events seem to be a cynical method for UK schools to improve their league table positions - the fact that they include sickness to rule children out of attending seems to be sending the message to kids and parents to take their kids to school even when sick There was a horrible case at one UK school who banned a 5 year old from a "perfect attendance" reward party/disco because he had been off school for a few days when his Father DIED

The school is now moving the goal posts for this term, children cant be late either. As for children that have to take time away for appointments I think the system is alittle unfair.

I think the whole things is cruel. Some kids cannot have 100% attendance through no fault of their own. DD has to go to hospital every 2nd Thursday. That is 2 -3 days of every month off school. Glad they don't do that here. ETA Yes, Sals you are right, they should have been given something. edited by Servants Quarters on 17/01/2011 I agree with the attendance thing. My sister's kids go to a school where they do this but my niece couldn't go on the trip because she had time off school - she had to have her adenoids out and grommets in!! Hardly choice. I think it is a good incentive for those who have 'I just don't feel like going to school' days but there should be extenuating circumstance that don't count, such as operations and long term illness that necessitates absence. However, I also understand that this kind of policy would be hard for the school to police... As for the snacks, not sure about that. Would they have been having snacks at the time they were in the cinema if they had just been at school? If so then yes, if not, then I don't see it as really necessary for a couple of hours.

So if child was absent due to illness they don't get to go? Are they encouraging children to come in to school when they're sick and speading all their germs?!

I think it is a nice idea that they are getting rewarded for something, but why does food have to be part of that reward. Often when I go to the cinema I wish it wasn't so ingrained in me that I have to have popcorn and a juice. I would love to be able to go and enjoy a movie without having to eat something... but even tho I've tried because I've always done it that way I just can't "enjoy" the movie without the popcorn... sad really.

My GD is only 6, he school had this incentive, If they kids complete 2 terms with 100% attendance they get to go out on a afternoon to the cinema, this took place last Thursday. All the kids were so excited, but my problem is why didnt the teachers plan ahead and ask parents for a bit of money to get the low sugar drinks, a little bag of fruit for them to have a munch on. All the Kids sat thru the film with nothing, I think its a little bit cruel to be honest. Your thoughts!!!!!!
