DH came home yesterday from getting his truck filled at the gas station. He was completely dumbfounded. The fuel game to just over 200 so DH gave the guy a 500 bill. He didn't have any thing smaller. The guy then asked DH about change. DH thought that the guy was asking if he had change so he said no. Apparently the guy asked DH if DH WANTED his change. So the guy was going to keep the almost 300 as a tip. Seriously?!?! How could this guy even assume that he was going to get that much as a tip.

I had an appointment for my ID card recently and had five minutes to spare so popped to the petrol station next to the Al Barsha centre. I handed the guy 150 and said 'full special please'. I never normally give the money first but stupidly did in my haste to not miss my appointment. I always look at the counter on the pump as I read a thread on here where people were being conned. As I watched the counter stopped at 120 and I saw the guy take the nozzle out of my tank and then push some buttons on the pump so it read 150. He then signalled that it was done and waved me off, he got the fright of his life when I put my window down and said 'No way I've been watching you' as I said my time was limited so he got a few choice words but I left feeling angry then later guilty because he must have been desperate to try and steal in this country.

I was at the petrol station and the attendant wanted to wash my window. I said if you do all of them I'll give you 5dhs, he said NO THANKS and didn't wash any...lol

While my mum was over around Christmas she wanted to go to the Karama, so off we went. She made some purchases in the first shop we went into and then we moved on. About 20 minutes and 10 shops later the guy from the first shop rushed up to us, in a bit of a state saying he had been looking all over for us, and handed my mum 250dhs - her change. I didn't notice what notes she had handed him, neither had she, and tbh he could easily have pocketed it but he was extremely honest and took the time to find us. Restores one's faith in others when you least expect it! edited by mimi on 04/04/2011

Something similar happened to me at the Emarat petrol station on Al Wasl Rd. I paid with a 500dh note for an amount that was close to 100dh then drove off. About an hour later I realised when I went to pay for something else and had no money! I went back and spoke to the manager and he immediately counted all the takings from that petrol pump and tallied it with the receipts - I did not even have to ask him to do this he offered. I got my 400dh back and I was very impressed.

Sometimes they're decent though. When I first moved to Dubai and was unfamiliar with the currency, I paid a petrol pump dude 500 instead of 50 and drove away. I realised about 30 mins later... and when I went back, he came running up to me and gave it back. He could have easily assumed it was his tip and kept it. same thing happened to me also, mine came to 95 I gave him 200AED. he gave me only 5 dhs & I also drove away. when I realised & went back, He said NO you gave me only 100 & his supervisor was also with him. his supervisor said we gave them a pouch & there is sparate small pocket in the pouch to keep their tips. he can not keep your money. my question : he can not keep that money anywhere else? Is he bound to keep the tips only in the same pouch? who knows?!!!!

That happened to us on the weekend at the car wash at the petrol station. DH paid with a AED50 note and didn't get his AED20 back...DH assumed that the guy had run out of change, but the guy never offered the money back even when the car was done, so DH had to ask....wouldn't mind, but DH always gives them a tip anyway when they are finished...

Obviously this is only happening because we are too embarrassed to say something, so this is a good time to spread the word.....do not tip if you feel it was forced upon you. It never happened before, this is really a new thing, so pls, don't be shy, say NO, an GIVE ME MY CHANGE.

At a petrol station, I was about to get out the car to get a coffee when the coffee delivery man came up to my window and offered to get it for me, he said I should try the new flat white. I didnt want the flat white, I wanted a latte, so he said 'just try it, its the same price, I promise you will like it' Eventually I agreed and said I would come in to get it. He insisted I wait in the car, he would get it for me. I wanted a large latte (18dhs) , and the flat white only comes in small (14dhs). Eventually he handed me the coffee and as I was handing over a 20dhs note, he said 'and something for me' I left him with the 20dhs note, but I was really annoyed because I ended up with a small coffee when I wanted a large, and I ended up paying MORE for it than I would have if I had got what I wanted in the first place...

Went to the plant nursery near Academic City on Saturday. Made a purchase - 35AED, gave the guy 40AED, which he folded up and put in his pocket. I asked for my 5 AED and he told me "It's for me". I told him "No, it's not!". He handed me a plant for the 5 AED, which I was ok with. LOL I got a free plant, he got 5 AED. Worked for me.

I've notice these sneaky tricks just recently, the attendants didn't do this about a year ago. Now they expect tips and give filthy looks if you don't give one :\:

What I hate most is when they full up the car, then they add just a tiny bit more fuel to make sure it comes up to 92 or 93 instead of 95, giving themselves a 2 or 3dhs tip. I would give the guy even more if he fills up my car to a whole number (i.e. 95 or 100 so I don't have to deal with coins)! DH usually drives off without giving them a tip, or giving them just 1 dhs when they try to give themselves 3dhs:\:
