Ok, so today is the last straw with my maid.....so far she has broken my rice cooker, my pancake factory and the the glass stove top is full of chips, which she blames my DD for..BUT today I get the Le Crueset out and the enamel is chipped to the @@@@ house! Now, I'm a patient woman but I'm so sick and tired of the "Oh sooo sorry Madam!!!" I'm thinking of taking some money out of her pay just to let her know that I'm not super rich and buy quality items which are very dear to me.

- I wouldn't let my teenage child use it because she doesn't understand the value of it, so I wouldn't encourage a maid to do it because she too doesn't understand the value. No better way to teach someone the value of something by making them pay for it

A friend of mine advised me to do this once, I was reluctant, but had a similar story to you. Maid broke my vacuum cleaner (again) and I went out, bought a new one and deducted it from her wages and gave her the receipt and said this is the receipt for the replacement vacuum you broke, and she never broke anything again....

No, I don't think she is doing on purpose, she's just not the sharpest tool in the shed ..... and I just don't tolerate stupid very well! I've just informed DH that she's got one month to develop a fraction of common sense or she's back on that plane.

I know they should be taking good care of everything but if something is really really precious then show it to them and say so - then they know to be extra careful! Or you could wash your pots yourself or buy Ikea. Now if she is doing it to **** you off then that is something else.

When I got together with DH, I accidentally dropped his beloved Le Crueset frying pan...broke practically in half! It's cast iron so actually quite brittle. Don't know who was more upset, him or me!

How on earth did she manage to chip a Le Creuset pan, they are invincible. Not if you drop them on a tile floor. :\: Poor tiles-my daughter gave my Le Creuset pans to the Op Shop while I was over here and bought me new 'pretty' ones as she thought the Le Creuset were old and heavy-sigh! She meant well!

Get rid now before it becomes too much and you get too attached. There are plenty of maids out that do a decent job without breaking things.

You are seeing the signs listen to them Is she generally clumsy in other things or is she being careless....not taking care when putting things away or putting them away properly I wouldn't say she was clumsy, her english is ok, she cleans well, although she does need prompting sometimes. I think I'm going to have to just give her a rocket....I honestly think she does these things to p!ss me of so I loose it! No can be that stupid! Maybe my DH should for warn her not to tempt the wrath of madam!

I would tell her straight up. "I'm so sorry, but I will need to take X hundred dirhams from your pay to cover the cost of replacing this pot. Its a very expensive pot, difficult to get in the UAE AND it was given to me by my sainted (departed, even) auntie. I know you didnt mean to chip it, but I have asked you to take care with my things several times and now this." Do not argue with her or participate in any drama over this whatsoever. Just tell her and then deduct the amount from her pay. You will find she becomes much much more careful very quickly. Good luck.

Warn her to take care and live with it or when her contract is up find a new maid. I look after my things also and if i feel there is a risk maid will break something i will only use it myself. They are different and maybe you could be expecting too much from her. I find my maid stilll falls back to old habits so keep her clear of something thats important to me. Yours is a common story. You will find just the threat of having to pay for damages will be enough to cure the problem without actually having to carry through on it. Accidents happen all the time and can't be helped but there is a difference between that and constant damage / misuse of items. I had a friend whose maid ruined every single item of new clothing my friend had bought herself after losing a lot of weight - until the maid was told she would have to pay the full price for the next ruined item. Overnight the boiling to bits/ shrinking/ burning with the iron stopped.

Best way is to deduct it from source! On a more serious note have you actually said that next time you break and/or damage something you will deduct it from her wages? If she is not expecting it might come as a shock to her. I would take the softly softly approach and speak to her again and say next time you do it I WILL deduct money from your salary.
