Thanks I may be being very blonde here, but if you purchased the phone in the UAE is it actually locked? I use my UK sim in UAE phones regularly - UK phones need to be unlocked to work with UAE sims.

dutchdesert, it definitely does NOT unlock your phone like that. i've tried too. i also use the dev team, and they are very clear that the software to unlock the new iphone 4 is not available yet (well, the version that i have). i've done the jailbreak thing, but it's still unlocked. you can also go to www.iclarified.com ... that's a pretty nifty website.

Why on earth should I share this, if it was not true?????? Because it's not true, at least not in the way you suggest. I could not believe it, but it worked in my case! (got the info from my provider back home), you just need the new update of Itunes. To repeat, iTunes will NOT magically unlock any carrier-locked phone simply by leaving it connected for 20 minutes. What happened to you is that YOUR MOBILE PROVIDER unlocked your phone. This is something that any of them can do if you can get them to agree to it, and it happens via iTunes. All they need is your IMEI number, which is the unique ID number that every single mobile telecoms device in the world has. They enter that number into Apple's system and authorise your phone to be unlocked. The next time you sync with iTunes, Apple's servers identify your phone using the IMEI and say "That phone is authorised to be unlocked" and voila, it's done. If you don't believe me, try leaving a carrier-locked iPhone connected to the latest version of iTunes. You can leave it for 24 hours if you like, it won't get unlocked. The process HAS to be instigated by your provider. My iPhone was jailbroken using specialist software and I never charge it via iTunes as iTunes can tell and will screw it up. I know this from sad experience Actually, iTunes can only screw it up if you try and update your iPhone's software using an official Apple update. iTunes cannot and will not force you to update, you have to agree to it first. You can use a jailbroken and unlocked iPhone with iTunes with absolutely no problems (including syncing, buying things from the App Store etc) as long as you don't install any of the official Apple software updates. I've been doing it since 2007! I use the Dev Team's unlocking solutions, and so whenever Apple comes out with a software update I have to wait until they've cracked it to ensure that it won't relock the phone or otherwise render it unuseable. Then I can install it. Unfortunately many people don't really understand what's involved, and so they get their unlocked/jailbroken iPhone and then when that message pops up in iTunes saying "New software is available for your iPhone" they click "OK" instead of "Cancel" and they're screwed...

If your provider is 02 back in the UK there is a form you can complete on their website and they will unlock it for free if you are on a pay monthly contract - takes about 3 days.

If you have it yailbroke here you can have a problem with itunes sync. That is why I don't like unlock it here, but if you have no choice, it seems to be the only way????? I checked it again and it depends per country. Check your provider backhome or try internet for your country (I'm not the only one) And yes mine is unlocked this way, because no shop could unlock it here........... (software latest version).

Sorry Choc, it is for the Iphone, read wrong, and thought just I want to share this with you all, because I was pleasantly surprised. Edna, you sound very sure, that it is not possible. Sorry to disapoint you, I unlocked Iphone 4 this way....................................... Why on earth should I share this, if it was not true?????? I could not believe it, but it worked in my case! (got the info from my provider back home), you just need the new update of Itunes. Are you sure it unlocked? Because anyone who has ever tried to update software on a jailbroken iPhone using iTunes has had all their information wiped out this way.

I charge mine through the laptop every time and it automatically connects to itunes and syncs. It has never given me a message saying it is unlocked. I'd be taking it back to where I bought it if it did!

You can do it yourself, connect to Itunes, leave for 20 min. you should get a message that your phone is unlocked. Good luck Sorry, but what on earth are you talking about? iTunes will not unlock an iPhone that is locked to a specific mobile carrier no matter how long you leave the phone connected to it. You need specialist jailbreaking/unlocking software to do that.

I got my British mobile phone unlocked in an Indian shop next to Union metro station. In that area there are quite a few "electronic" shops and they will unlocked you mobile phone for a tenner.
