hi there - would love to know how much is appropriate to feed a 5 mo boy (almost 8 kg) of expressed milk?
also - my DH thinks its a good idea to have a can of "emergency" formula available in case there is a situation where i can't feed my LO.

i know we will use it rarely (if at all) so wondering what is the best option for ethical, good for baby, as close-to-natural formula for bub. i am a rubbish pumper so i cant see me having back up frozen milk :(

re; formula Newborn babies may take quite small amounts of infant formula to start with. However, by the end of their first week, most will need approximately 150 to 200ml per kg of the baby’s weight per day until they are six months old. This amount will vary from baby to baby. taken from http://www.nhs.uk/Planners/birthtofive/Pages/formula-feeding-information.aspx Hope that helps! :) Similac is what I use, recommend by the hospital - I combination feed - I tried a few others when I felt that lo was getting wind and he ended up with constipation so back on the similac just use a smaller teat with an advent bottle and a happy baby! - MAM are meant to be very good for colic/wind. Just remember your lo may be out of sorts afterwards as his tummy will not be used to it! :) edited by vixster on 15/04/2011

I thought I just replied to this. That's odd. http://www.kellymom.com/bf/pumping/milkcalc.html has great information on how much ebm a baby needs. In terms of composition, there isn't much difference between the regular formulas. Some parents choose organic brands.

mine 8 month old is formula fed with Similac. Not all like it but its the only one that mine have ever liked. I find its hard to judge how much they will eat. We've been working on solids with DS but he gets distracted from it then frustrated. With his bottles I find it depends on the time of day. His feeds range from 60ml to 180ml.
